On my out this morning I dropped my crab pot in the Manasquan River, pretty far up, just outside MRC. Came back in from fishing, and it was gone! This early in the season, on a weekday, it's usually local fishermen out on the water. Douchbag.

Sorry to hear that. People do suck! I stopped putting them out in Barnegat Bay because people were stealing them every time I put them out. It's a shame

That sucks Darren.
1/2 dozen small fish hooks accidentally embedded in the line under the float might deter the thief. Of course the hooks got snagged in the line accidentally .

I've had four stolen. 3 from the Navesink and one in Cheesequake.
You have to conceal better., These dirt bags see a CLEAN float and they investigate Two years ago caught a guy in the Navesink in a windowshieldless POS center console pull up along side mine and stop.
Use very small floats for avoid curiousity.

I like that. Sabiki's or freshwater hooks would be perfect

I certainly don't recommend inserting fish hooks in your float since you might be the one that ends up in the emergency room. I have been crabbing the Navesink for many years and have had many traps destroyed by boats or stolen, etc. More often than not, I had people taking the crabs and not the trap! One sure method I have found to deter thieves is to let your traps and floats get slimy and raunchy from the mud, snails, etc. Most people are reluctant to lift a heavy float that's covered with slop.

Maybe your float fell off, just a thought.

Last year we had 3 out of 4 traps stolen out of the Manasquan River. In today's day and age with web cams and drones I can't believe someone would blatantly steal pots. I hope someone catches these folks.

Drop them over with your gps, no line, and retrieve them with a boat pole/hook. May take a few mins to find them but worth it. Did it at my house in lavallette for years.

That has possibilities. Maybe a snag hook on a strong line. it's cheaper than a GPS tracker inside the float which would lead me right to the thief.
