Floated the Upper Big D from Long Eddy to Callicoon on 4/22.
Water was gin clean and very low. Fishing was ok, Wilson got a few small brown trout right away. We fished the fast water and deep dropped in the slower sections. All totaled I think there were half a dozen walleye, half a dozen brown trout, lost count on cookie cutter smallmouth, a handful of fallfish and 1 rock bass.
At times you could look down into the crystal clear water and see small pods of shad swimming around. Lost a real nice rainbow trout that had some shoulders, a real heartbreaker. Nothing spectacular except watching a juvenile bald eagle swooping down and trying to pick off a merganser, that was pretty crazy. No rain at all, at least the wind was calm and we had a little bit of cloud cover.
Post float was steak and beers at Lydia's in town, then sitting outside the hotel room watching drift boats come down through junction pool.
4/23: No rain at all overnite, but the wind was cranking !! Breakfast at Circle E. Decided not to up to the Beaverkill or the West branch in Deposit, not much of a fan for fishing dirt (no water up there) so we looked at junction pool, wing was howling !! Scratched that plan and went down river to Kellhams Bridge, we both rolled a few fish there. Then we hit Hankins, Wilson got a walleye !! Stopped in at Callicoon and there were 3 people in the good spot, so I just BS'd with them, the guy had a huge Tiger trout on the stringer and said he just released a brown and a rainbow.
Gin clear water, windy, bright sunshine by noon, tucked and turned, headed for home. probably wont get back up that way till October now. Pray for RAIN !!
