View Full Version : Cutting a rod tip?

I have a 7' Ugly stick spinning combo that has to be 25 years old. I used it for tons of in shore stuff when I was a novice and used to loan it to friends. The tip got super screwed up on my last move. Other than that the reel and rod are perfect. Can I cut the tip right above the next eye with a dremel wheel and still have a functioning rod? I know it will be stiffer. But other than that?

Better than throwing it away.

Yep cut the tip down and glue a new rod tip on.

Yes, cut the tip and glue on a new one and the pole is as good as new. If you don't want to do it your self most sporting goods stores can do it.

Oh, so I can't just cut it to the next eye? That's cool I'm sure I can epoxy a new tip on. I'll look into what I need to buy. A fun project at least. Not worth having someone else repair. Minorly sentimental because I THINK it was my first rod I bought for myself when I was a teenager.

When you say the tip got screwed up, do you mean the tip top (the top guide) broke? if that's the case, you can heat it with a lighter and remove it. If the rod actually broke, you can cut it and put a new tip on- do not use epoxy. They make glue sticks to put a new tip on. Epoxy is permanent and when the guide breaks (and this is common), you want to be able to get it off.

If and when you cut it, use the corner edge of a file and just go around it until you get through. Since the tip diameter is so small, you want to be delicate.

Yes, the eye is crushed. I'll try heating it. Thank you.

Don't epoxy the new tip on. Use the proper heat glue.

Most local tackle stores will have the tip and the glue as well... You need to be sure the tip matches the diameter of the the rod tip/

You might as well just have them put a new tip on for you while you are there.

Any easy job that takes a few minutes so you'll be in and out.

If you are in the Union area I will do it for you for FREE as I have the tip glue and some tip tops. No need to cut to next eye unless you want to change the action
Simple fix as it will take five minutes
