Got to the boat Capt Jerry was up at the inlet checking out conditions. He decided it was a go and what a great choice it was. Very good life shorts and keepers mixed in. Boat limit 12 man and some Cod mixed in. Middle of the day I reeled up to check my bait and whammmmmmm spool scream rod bent over, I thumbed the spool to put a little pressure on what I thought was going to be a World Record Striper. But nooooooooooo apparently a hump backed whale guys saw it on the other side of the boat I was lapped over under the boat. It spooled me and it was gone. Luckily it appeared the hook some how got undone as one angler on the opposite side of the boat caught a small fish tangle in my line. The mate hand line up my braid so thank goodness the fish didn't get tangle up in it. Couple of us with Double Limits (ORL) other with limits. My friend Rob V was the Cod Father with 4 nice size keeper Cod. Damn I love togging

Boy that sounds like a whale of a Tale LOL. Just joking but a great report for the start of the season I'm glad to know the fish are there. Now all we need is the weather to cooperate so we can get out. The next few days don't look too good.

Nice catching there Men
Hopefully the weather window stays open
A Stryped Carp would have been the trifecta but I guess the whale made up for it

I hooked a 100lb Thresher while ling fishing once if that counts.:) After all, I did get it into the boat when capt Chad blew it's head off with a 12 gauge.

Saw Tony Fish hook a baby whale while tuna fishing on the B'klyn 20(?) years ago. Same trip, he took off a bunch of slack line on the deck and hand threw his butterfish out far, must have seen them breaking. Damned if a tuna didn't leap out of the water to grab it.

On a balmy day in very clear blue water many Septembers ago on a sponser boat at the not so secret mid range BFT spot we had a momma and pup (Pilot whales I believe ) play with the boat, swimming belly up as they cruised underneath us and resurfaced at times for a snack of the sardines we were pitching to BFT and false albies. Momma final took a bait which we did not want to see, After spooling most of a Penn Intl 50 Wide we got her free by luck and got the hook back but YES hooked a whale, been there done that albeit on a dead stick.
Great haul Joey and nice picture of you and tog AGAIN although I believe your middle finger may be pointing at some in the picture;)
