Winter Flounder (non) report

Wind guru showed today was going to be a rare combination of the right tide, warm temps and bright sun so I had to try the early spots on the Shrewsbury and Navesink. Tried shallow flats and deeper holes.

Maybe had two hits trying 5 spots, chumming with mussels and fishing sand worms. Got the last of the flood and first 3 hours of ebb which was ideal. It was a great time to be on the river and except for a couple clammers, no one was out - no one fishing from shore either.

The water temp was 43 in the Navesink and 44 in the Shrewsbury do that was not too shabby. It looks like it warms up with the right tides in 2 weeks so

Flounder fishing is a blast so even though you didn't catch you had a better day than most other guys. A for effort and any day on the water is a good day! As others have posted, thanks for a true report in spite of an empty cooler!

Third week of March according to my notes is the best time for the river run.

It will continue in the bay and outside until the bluefish come.

This time of year Shark River is your best bet, if you want flounders... If you want bigger fish, Raritan Bay, but they usually start to hit several weeks after Shark River.. The bay flounder bite is best at about the time the river is fading... If you want to fish for flounder this time of year, a warm sunny windless day is best on an outgoing tide.. Often the cold incoming ocean water kills the bite this time of year.. I would fish shallow on a sunny day, on the top of the tide into the outgoing... bob

I'm with Bob on this... Shark River is a very good place to start in the early season. Lots of public access on the bulkhead on both sides of the river, although I think the Avon side bulkheads might be still under construction from Sandy damage.

Once the season gets into full swing, one of our sponsors www.fishermansdennj.com/ rents small skiffs which are perfect for fishing this area. The dark mud flats in the back which are very shallow is just what you are looking for in the early season. They warm up the water and an outgoing tide will be best.

Keep those reports coming No Limit. I have a feeling the Flounder will wake up soon given the mild winter we've had.

Shark River is the hot spot for early season. The drain pipe by the Tennis Court has a nice hole. Find it on Google Map or Bing Map. Also the piers by the ramp and fuel dock. Make sure you throw the chum upstream of where you are fishing so it winds up on the bottom where you want it. Canned corn is good too. Crushed clams can be thrown far - crushed mussels not as much
