Just coming in the inlet from one of the best SeaBass trips I've ever been on. I fished with Leif Pettersen and Jon Mueller. Those 2 guys were limited by 730.
Bobby put us on a piece that was loaded with life. Bluefish, triggerfish & big knuckleheads. He made one wiggle and it was fantastic.
I didn't take any pics but I'm hoping others will provide theirs. Thank you to the Gambler, Capt. Bob and the fantastic mates and staff. Todd, Chris, Jill, Nikko, Zachary and Tom,
If you have the time, try to get out on one of these Gambler trips.

Thanks for putting this together Howie. Maybe if the regs go back to 25 fish I could fish for 2 hours instead of 1
Great time, great crew, and great company.

Ditto on all the comments about a great trip. Andrew and I limited out on jumbos, with a couple of blues thrown in to keep it interesting. I decked a SLOB on the last drop that missed winning the pool by ounces. All the signs of a great trip are here- my back is in spasm, my arms are sore, and my thumbs are shredded.
And a big shout out to Capt. Bobby and the crew of the Gambler- all top-notch folks who work their asses off to make sure that we have everything that we need, when we need it.
It was good meeting some of the other NJF'ers on board!

I had the opportunity to be on the Gambler offshore seabass trip on the 16th with 4 long-time fishing buddies. The crew and captain were very professional and friendly. Since most of the guys fishing were seasoned salts, I'm sure that helped the crew relax and make the trip even better. We all had a great time.
I had the opportunity to meet and speak to several NJF members, which was also very enjoyable. The trip out was smooth despite the wind and the gill net we ran over about an hour out of the inlet. The idiot who put that thing there with no high flier or radar reflector is a real moron. We set up at about 0530 and the bite was on after the captain made a slight adjustment on the anchors to avoid the dogs. All 4 of us limited out by 0800, with many jumbos up to 6 lbs and most fish in the 3-4 lb range. We then stopped fishing so as not kill any fish. Catching and releasing seabass at those depths is fatal if the air bladder is not carefully deflated. We took a break to eat and then the bite tapered, so the captain made a move to another snag. We decided to go back to the rail and see if we could land a few other species. We got a few nice sized blues and a handful of monster bergalls and then quit to avoid un-necessary seabass carnage. Sad that you have to quit fishing when theres so much time left on the trip. Even sadder to have to go 80 miles in winter to get them, but at least theres a boat willing to go. I give them a lot of credit as winter can be a crapshoot with weather. We were fortunate that we did not freeze and the seas eventually laid down. Captain Bob pulled the plug at around 1:30 and we hit the dock at 5:30. Nice ride in, but grueling after being out there for 12 hours already.
Thanks to all on the trip for the camaraderie and Merry Christmas to the Gambler Crew and all NJF members.

In the case of limiting out fast , is there really anything that can be done ? Could you move to a cod wreck? porgy wreck ? move inshore and finish off by linging ? I am not naïve enough to think that certain wrecks hold specific species only..but I am sure these guys that are on the water every day year after year have pretty good knowledge of what pile holds what..love going offshore for sea bass, but when you encounter solid fishing it kind of sucks having to stop fishing because you're limited out..that 10 fish reduction years ago really makes a huge difference

I guess it's all how you look at it. After I had my limit, my cooler was full, I was happy as a clam. I've had many days that I've spent 12 hrs on the water with nothing in the box.
I look at it as you have to take the good with the bad. I would have been happy to go back to the barn at 11:00.

Big tip of the cap for Howie and crew for putting this together. I know how much work goes into planning these these things...It is however very gratifying when it all comes together and you're looking down the rail watching fish flying all over the place, people busting chops and new friendships and memories being forged.
That my friends is what our great sport is all about!!
Thanks again for doing this Howie... You my friend are a keeper!!
