Ran an open trip with 6 of our regulars today with the hopes of getting in on the morning bass bite then doing a little local togging to finish up the day.
Left before dawn and got down the beach pretty quick. Found the bait and birds where I thought they were gonna be and got into the bass pretty quickly. At first shads worked well, yet the fish were a bit picky (we were NOT catching what we were reading!) and were STACKED UP under the boat at times almost top to bottom.
A move later on further down the line got into some truly wild action with bass rolling on herring and peanuts - at this point we started casting plugs and the bite was definitely a little better with them - only problem was BOAT TRAFFIC. Never seen so many boats out in December, it was insane!! We had fish on SP Minnows, swimmers, poppers, you name it - this bite was pretty good!
Around noon we switched to tog, and our first drop was VERY slow just a couple of shorts and a keeper, our second was more of the same. All the keepers were 15-17" males and the bite was very very picky.
So with the slow tog bite, we finished up in the beach with the bass and got a couple more shorts. For the day we had ~75 bass, only 1 35" taken by Jon on an SP, a couple right at 28", and the rest under 28" with about 20 fish being "bonus" sized. We also had a few keeper tog in the hour that we did it. Overall a great day of catching just not a lot of meat - but still a great day!
