Wow what a day! We headed out early with our lucky charm brent aka 'jimmy' aka 'yimmy' (the guy has come on 3 trips...1 was the best fluking we've ever had and 1 was the best striper action we've ever had...i'm going to cut off his fingers and sell them on necklaces and make a fortune!)
We were set up to troll assuming we'd have to search for the fish but captain eagle eyes john spotted birds working in the distance. So we chugged on over poppers ready and pull up with one other boat. All 3 of us cast poppers into the feeding frenzy and bang, slap, boom, triple header first three casts!
But it was not a 1st casts curse...the action continued all day! no bite window! tides made no difference! I've never seen anything like it...the birds worked all day non stop. John kept us on the birds for 10 hours and we caught fish at a fairly consistent rate for the entire time.
Most of the stripers and all the bigger stripers came on poppers, some (including my biggest for the day) smashed boat side! totally unreal insane action! As the morning got late the fish did get a little picky on the poppers though and some pods preferred subsurface swim shads or slow bottom rolled shads.
Half way through the day we clashed with a few schools of absolute bruiser hulk bluefish! Man those things put striper power and strength to shame if anyone needs a reminder on that! We switched to av jigs and had a blast doing battle with those demons for a while until we went back to the striper side of the battle field.
For the guys that refuse to stop trolling, you're really missing out...grab a spinner with a popper and have some fun! surface feeding fish with birds to show the way are a gift!! take advantage of it!
Totals landed for the day, not including misssed hits and lost fish, for the day were 19 stripers and 6 bluefish for me, 13 stripers and 1 bluefish for john...lucky charm jimmy can't count so he 'estimated' his catch at 'a bigger number than what we caught' Probably around 50 stripers popped and swim shadded on lighter gear and a dozen or so hulk blues!
The only limit we cared about was filled within 45 minutes (no fish for the oversized slot, but not interested in keeping a fish that big anyway). and we played warzone CPR for the next 9 hours or so! enjoy the CPR fish porn! :D
