The weekend is here and I was hoping the surf would be calming down to a point where conditions would be perfect. I fished Wednesday and today (Friday) and the good news is there are some fish around but you really have to work for them. The surf is still pounding our shoreline with 3 to 5 foot waves and the key is to find a beach where they are not on top of each other so there is an opportunity to let a bait sit on the bottom long enough for a fish to find it. Wednesday I tried Middle Cove, Normandy, and Tiger Shores. All of these areas were virtually unfishable due to the huge surf. Three Jacks and one whiting were the only fish that found the spoons and fishbites that I tried. Today the surf had calmed a little bit but Tiger Shores still had the rolling waves that made conditions terrible. A short ride to Santa Lucea found large waves but spaced out to the point where it was fishable. Marty Barlow and I managed around a dozen whiting and croakers, one bluefish, and six jacks. Fishbites and cut shrimp accounted for all of the fish that we caught. They were all taken from the first trough within 15 yards of the beach. Once the big wave action ends I feel these fish will turn on and the catch rate will greatly increase. The forecast for the weekend is for light easterly winds and the high tides will be from 11am to 12 noon. Hope for decreasing wave action to continue and this will make our situation for putting some fish in your cooler that much easier. Bluefish, spanish mackerel, jacks, whiting, croakers, and hopefully a few pompano should all be around if we just get some favorable conditions. Good luck and catch em up.
