10-16 Canyon Report
We headed back to the canyon Tuesday. Since there has been a day bite, rather than fish for mahi-mahi we anchored for tuna right away.
It did not take long before we read fish under the boat.
In the next 30 minutes we landed 5 and lost a couple but then the bite turned off.
For the next 5 hours we read tuna under the boat from 100' to 200' but they would not bite.
When the sun went down we landed another and lost a couple and it was quiet again.
It was not until later at night when yellowfin schooled under the boat and began to feed.
We picked away at 50lb to 100lb yellowfin until 3am. There was another lull until 5am when the bite started again, and lasted until sunrise.
Some notable catches were:
Dean Anderson from Fishkill, NY with his limit of yellowfin up to 100lbs.
Gary Yearwood from Staten Island NY with his limit of yellowfin.
Frank Pogue from Willingboro NJ with 2 yellowfin and 2 longfin.
Greg Humbert from Staten Island NY with 2 yellowfin and 1 longfin.
Nuno DeCosta from Artsly, NY with 2 yellowfin.

It looks good for upcoming trips. The water temperature has ranged from 72.2 to 73 degrees and more tuna are moving into the canyon every day.
There is some space on the trip sailing 5PM Sunday.

The big Jamaica is scheduled to sail on 31hr trips at 7AM every Tuesday and Thursday.

21hr overnight trips sail 5PM every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.
Trips are scheduled through early November.

Some of those yellows look like they were on their way to being in the Allison variety... Much longer sickle fins. Have you noticed this as a trend with your recent catches? If so, that's awesome! I know it's much more common out west and seasonally in the Caribbean. Would be cool to start seeing them in our northeast canyons.

Awesome trip.....love reading these reports from the home state. looks like nj is having a great tuna season! I caught my first canyon tuna on the Jamaica back in 1994....was proud as a peacock that day. Great boat and crew.


As for the Alison's I do not think there is any difference between an Allison and a regular ol yellowfin. Typically they do not get the sickle fins until they are over - certain weight...nj does not see many real big yellowfin so they do not get many "Allison" the 40- 80 lb yellowfin we see out here in so cal doe not have sickle fins. I suppose there are exceptions to every rule and some fish may be genetically wired to develop sickle fins at smaller weights. Those are my thoughts....
