10- 10 report
The Friday night Canyon trip was a good one.
It did not take long after we anchored to catch the first tuna Friday night.
We read the fish under the boat from 70' to 150' most of the night. At times they went from 70' all the way down to 240'.
We picked away all night at yellowfin, longfin, and bigeye.
The biggest fish we landed weighed 130lbs.
Gary Burak from landed a 110lb yellowfin and an 85lb yellowfin.
Most of the fish were caught on bait but, 8oz chrome hammered jigs were also effective.
John Edginton from At Glenn PA caught his limit of yellowfin and 1 longfin on a jig.
We had a number of sharks around the boat last night which is unusual being that the water is almost 73 degrees.
We saw a small mako and several blue sharks in the slick at times.
There was definitely something bigger and quicker than a blue shark that we never saw.
Several tuna were bitten off by something large, three tuna landed had bites taken out of them, and one, "would be" 40 pounder was bitten in half just before we gaffe it.
When the fishing was hot we had as many as 6 on at a time.
Some notable catches were:
Joe Peldunas from Durham NC with three 50 - 70lb yellowfin.
Pat Brennan from Brick NJ with 2 yellowfin and 2 longfin.
Glen Pala from Hillsborough NJ with 1 nice yellowfin and 1 longfin.
Ed Kushkabe from NYC caught 1 yellowfin and 2 longfin.
The longfin were 30 to 45lbs and the yellowfin were mostly 50 to 75lb with a few larger mixed in.
It looks good for upcoming trips.
More tuna are moving into the canyon every day.
The big Jamaica is scheduled to sail on 31hr trips at 7AM every Tuesday and Thursday.
21hr overnight trips sail 5PM every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.
Trips are scheduled through early November.
