View Full Version : Favorite NJ Party Boat for Bottom Fishing this Time of Year

I'm mostly a freshwater guy and do most of my salt bottom fishing in the early season outside of NJ. My friends want to get out this weekend and put me on picking an NJ boat to do some bottom fishing. Since we're waiting for seabass, it looks like most boats are targeting porgies, ling, flounder and cod. I see the OE is doing pretty well, but I'm curious which boats are everyone's favorites for bottom fishing this time of year. Feel free to PM me with any non-sponsor favorites too.

The Angler, Big Mohawk and OE are good bets for bottom fishing.

The Angler... Capt. George is second to none. He always puts you on the meat.

If you are south Belmar or PP I'm a big fan of Ocean Explorer, not sure you consider Mimi and party boat as it's mostly charters and runs open some days. Never fish Mohawk or Any boats up north bottom fishing. But I have to say all of the boats that sponsor this site produce. Good luck and catchem up

Thanks - I'm up in Sussex Cty and my friends are in Bergen so shore location doesn't really matter to me - and I heard on the OE you may even get a Lobstah !!!

Another question - typically what depth are these trips fishing right now and how much weight on average are you using? I don't want to bring 6-8 oz's and need 12's or larger

You could be fishing in places up to 200 feet and if there is current, you might need some 10 and 12 ounce weights.
I would choose the boat you want to head out on and email or call the Captain a day or 2 before.
Push comes to shove, you can always purchase sinkers on the boat too.

Right now you can get away with 6-8oz sinkers inshore but you always want to be prepared. Lets say the captain makes a deep drop for ling or cod you might need 10-16 oz of weight.
Best advice is carry everything this time of year. All the lead you might need plus toss some jigs in the Box. You never know when a captain might stop for some bass if they are there on the way in or out.

Great advice Justin!!
And thanks once again everyone for making the extra effort to support our sponsor boats.
They deserve and appreciate your business and keep the lights on around here!!

I was porgy fishing on the Angler on Thursday. We fished in 30 to 60 feet of water with little current. I used an 8 because that was the smallest I brought. Some guys were using 4's. Depends on what the boat is targeting. Ling and cod will be a lot deeper.

I respectfully disagree. It was a gorgeous day out and if you didn't have 10oz you weren't holding. Bring all the lead you want be prepared for everything especially if you don't get out to much.

The OE has been fishing deep and the current has been running. If you're going on the OE call Bobby his number is listed on the site he well give you great advice.

Better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it.

All be prepared for any thing.
On another note we had Captains Ron Sr and Jr join us on the Angler for some porgy fishing. I have seen this numerous times at the Atlantic Highland, Captains and mates fish on other boats if they aren't sailing that day. Is this common at other ports?

Why not buy one.

Good info guys, I appreciate it... and it's exactly my point since I had no idea what depth these boats are fishing right now and it seems they bounce around and it can be anything. For bottom fishing I'm always either inshore where I almost never need more than 8oz or I'm way deep tile fishing which is the other extreme.
I can't bring everything so what's the heaviest you think I may need right now in this context?
Second is rigs... what are you guys using for the deeper ling / cod / flounder on these mixed trips right now? Something like a tog rig or a hybrid rig that has say a higher larger hook dropper for cod and a smaller on the bottom hook for ling & flounder or ???

I'm using 8 or 10oz. Tying high low rig 40lb test mono. Low hook #3 gommy one green bead length about 12" from the main line 4" off the sinker. High was 18" above the low #6 bait holder again about 12" from the main line one red bead. Also 4" swimming shad on the low hook in white glow. That was the ticket yesterday for the ling. Tim fished same way most of the day then changed to no gulp and got a nice founder on the low. I got a nice cod on the high.
