I fished there five years ago. Seems like the hard-core boats are at Mission Bay. I fished on the Mission Belle and caught all kinds of fish I didn't know what they were. The captain was hard core and his mate was from N.J. Check out Mission Belle Sportfishing on line. Look at the schedule. They go half day (not reccomended) 3/4 day (that's what I did) Overnight and week-end trips. (expensive) Good luck! PM me if you want.

Take the longer trips if you can.

The half day trips are a waste.

The pelicans will grab your live bait on the way down.
The seals will grab your fish on the way up.

The longer trips are more productive.

If you're going there for a few weeks and can pull it off I suggest going out of H&M Landing or point Loma for a multi-day trip into the Mexican waters. The tuna fishing and yellowtail fishing are in sane there! I was born and raised in Southern California and Those are some of my favorite trips.

Thanks for the info fellas! Will post back the outcomes! Fwiw... I didn't do the rain dance but good luck here... If I need to tell the kids how to get,set up and start the genny, I'm gonna be pissed! Just put 60# bow weights on the pulleys, hopefully for nothing...

Southern California has the best fishing in the country right now. Yellowfin/Bluefin tuna, yellowtail, wahoo, marlin....all within 20 miles of the beach. I have fished all over and this is as good as I have seen it in the united states for pelagic species. Tuna 15-70 lbs with an occasional 100 pound plus, Yellowtail 10-40 lbs, Striped Marlin 100-250 lbs. wahoo 25-50 lbs. Half day boats are getting yellowtail and occasionaly a tuna as well. A buddy of mine scored an opah a couple weeks ago fishing live bait for tuna. 130 lbs....crazy looking fish. Enjoy.
