Hi everyone, longtime reader first time poster.

I do a bunch of fishing all over the jersey coast. I don't own a ocean-faring boat so I stick mostly to the shore and bay fishing. Do plenty of party boats and occasionally rent. The info on this board is always great and has lead to many successful fishing trips for myself and friends!

This weekend I'm looking to do something a little different, and I could use advice as it is new to me. I am planning to rent a skiff from oceanic marina on the Navesink. I have never fished that area before. Me and friend plan to bring light tackle set ups and are looking to catch whatever is biting..

Anyone have any general advice for fishing that area? I know this is an odd time of the year as the summer flounder should be moving out, especially with the wind we are having this week. Being protected do you think the river is holding anymore fluke? If not what should we look to target and any setup recommendations?

My game plan was to rig up a 1oz spro tipped with bait and bounce it along the bottom for whatever is interested in biting it.. futile effort? Should we concentrate on schoolie bass or blues?

Welcome aboard.

Personally would concentrate on some bass rather then trying fluking.

Don't forget that fluking season will over on 26th if you planning on fishing on Sunday and keeping some fish.

Grab some crabs of the walls while passing under bridges as well for some good eating as well as bait.

Again other might provide better insight then me since never really concentrated on fishing there.

If you are going during the day, the river is full of snapper/taylor blues (12" to 15") and peanuts. If you have a cast net and an aerator, I would pick up some peanuts. They should be all around the marina. Then live line them using a 12" to 24" leader and 1 to 3 oz weight. Try by Hartshone Woods, the holes by the oceanic bridge or all the way back by Red Bank.

exactly what I'm going to do considering the weather
if the wind sucks

drive around
anchor and throw live baits

every fall brings me an occasional surprise on live baits

2 years in a row a caught an out of season
7lb fluke
hiding from wind

it is a slow ride depending on wind and tide but at this time of year drifting where the rivers meet can be red hot

I can tell you that the peanuts were stacked in front of McLoones the other day. Small bass picking away on them.
