Pilot fish and banded rudderfish are pretty much the same and both have very distinctive dark vertical bars. All the pictures I have ever seen of the Almaco Jack show the lack of bars, and the very distinct black "slash" over the eye... It looks to be an Almaco jack to me, but I sure don't know as much as a charter captain would about local species.. The Almaco Jacks are not real common north of the Carolinas, but NJ is withiun their range, and some years do show up in fair numbers.... bob

I agree Bob...it's an Almaco. I replied pilotfish to the rudderfish comment as a joke.

It's an Greater Amberjack. Not at all uncommon south of here.
The only two fish with that black line coming off the eye are Amberjack and a Almaco Jack. An Almaco Jack has a much higher dorsal fin.

Banded rudder, they do not usually have the stripes you see in some drawings.

Definitely a banded rudder without the body bands. The fins do not match the jack fins.

Likely a banded rudderfish

or a Alamco AKA longfin yellowtail- based on habitat preference it's not where it's supposed to be though..
