Quick question on tackle....I see the Gambler's site says no braid for chunking. Is that absolute or will they allow a 150-200 yard mono topshot backed with braid?

capt74
09-02-2015, 05:36 PM
Jim a 200 yard top shot would be ok. Just make sure that its 200 yards.

Come on, guys. No feet dragging. Glory goes to the one who does, not the one who watches. The 36 gives us an awesome amount of opportunities and with only 24 passengers, lots of elbow room.

Don't wait for the last minute to sign up. The guys have been catching yellowfin, longfin, mahi, wahoo, swords and even some tripletail!

We have had a load of NJF-Gambler tuna trips and they have been a blast.

36 hours is the perfect length of a canyon trip for Bobby or Mike to zero in on the fish.

Dont wait or you'll be holding the gate!!

If I could just add my $0.02 here. The Original NJF tuna trips on the Gambler were take novice anglers offshore within a group of people they could trust. Funny to see it evolve into an iron man trip. Not saying that is a bad thing, but have you ever seen the excitement of an angler catching a tuna for the first time, well.
Maybe putting together a simple 24 hour NJF trip for those who would like to get their feet wet to the offshore scene may be a better option. They can climb aboard with seasoned NJF anglers. We filled the boxes countless times on a 24 hour trip.

capt74
09-12-2015, 08:12 AM
Andy, With all due respect this is not an Iron Man trip. 36 hours gives you more opportunity to catch different kinds of fish. Some time devoted to Tile fish Mahi wreck fish and so on. Novices are more than welcome to join us. The more the merrier. This trip is about fishing with the guys on this board. Experience does not matter. I have been fortunate to be on a lot of these trips and they are a blast. A lot of ball busting and laughs. So if anyone wants in call and book.

I would tell you the longer the trip the better for the beginner. With more time there is less pressure and more time to,look learn and adjust! On a 24 I too have filled the box, also if you miss the "bite" do to whatever trip is over. The extra time allows you that chance to recover and enjoy a catch. As previously stated nice to try for tiles, mahi do,some trolling Etc. just my 2 cents! Hell I was asking for a longer trip, for years. Now they offer 21-48hr trips. Pick you trip and go! And enjoy yourself

Is a penn rampage rod rated for 30-80lb with two roller guides and a TLD-25 good enough for a trip like this? If so how should the reel be spooled for this?

2na
09-13-2015, 09:33 PM
Foot,
That rod will get the job done. The reel would be fine also with 200yd of 65 lb braid with 200yd of 60lb mono on top. That said...braid is NOT usually encouraged for use in party boat chunking but, would probably be accepted for use as backing. Also, reports...currently, are of 100-200lb big eye and 80lb YFT which will make short work of 60lb line. That outfit would work well for longfin and up to 60lb YFT.
Moral of the story...I'd look for alittle bigger reel.

The fish are mean! I would say. 350/400 yards of 80 is a guide for reel size. I like a 30tw or 50sw. I started with a 6/0 then 9/0. Now 50sw and 50tw. Etc. caught an 185 bigeye on a shimano mid size reel. Go and learn and enjoy!
I am not on the 36 I am on th 48hr trip, if you want I have a 6/0 and 9/0 you more then welcome to use. I do have an extra 50 international but will not commit to lending till I meet you .Let me know.

This date will have some good prizes to raffle off sponsored by Nick Cicero and Bob from Bimini Bay, Reel Seat Tackle and others, including a free 24hour canyon trip on the Gambler as a door prize. Proceeds from the raffle will go directly to SSFFF who is hiring scientists that will help keep us fishing for fluke. There is still plenty of room on this trip, so sign up soon.

Proceeds From the NJfishing trip raffle will go directly to SSFFF. This organization has done tremendous work with scientists to keep us fishing for fluke for generations to come. But we still need your support --there is still work to do. The SSFFF is exceptional in that no member has ever taken any money for personal use --ALL proceeds have gone directly to good science so that we may keep fishing for fluke for generations to come. Please continue to support. Thanks.

Depends on how many I put in the tank. Maybe one or two to the boat(mates), a loin or two to a no catch buddy or bring 'em all home...I once ate tuna steaks 43 nites in a row, a one nite break & then another 30 something nites...think it's illegal to sell 'em without proper permits...

BB,
A 114 is fine. However, 50lb line is a little light for the size fish that have been reported lately. That drag has enough snot to handle 80lb line and you'd probably fit plenty on the spool. I'd go with 80lb line.

As 2na said, should work BUT gotta have at least 100-150yds mono top shot-80#. During the day you can go down in leader size all the way to 40# fluorocarbon-just lighten up on the drag...

I use 80lb florocarbon leader tied to a 150lb to 200lb sambo swivel with egg sinker on main line attached to leader hoped that helped once you get to the boat many people will be glad to help

Hunter 2
10-05-2015, 04:24 PM
You want a long topshot on head boats so your braid does not cut through other guys lines while tuna fishing. Tuna come in flurries and things get crazy real fast. Sometimes 4 to 6 fish on at once and guys running up and down the rail passing rods over and under others. The best thing to do is reel in your line till the craziness is over so the hooked fish get landed. Keep the chum slick going though.

Pennsy Guy
10-05-2015, 05:44 PM
If you want jig braid is OK with a short top shot...jigging is up drift(if lines are going out port side, you're on starboard side jigging)...5-7' fluoro leaders to swivel to main line with egg sinker. As I stated above, have some lighter leaders to use during the day...they mostly are a bit leader shy the brighter it is...if in doubt, just ask mates or any of the guys fishing...the mates'll check your drag unless you have a spring scale...hope this & what was said above helps.....

Hey Chucky,

Nope, haven't moved or transferred, just working weird Shifts. I am on my 3rd different Shift since I started here in November of 2013. I talked to Tim about about making a trip this year and he just can't get away from work or the family to make it happen. I told him we NEED to go on multiple trips next year to make up for the last few years. Heck, we only got out for stripers once this year and once last year. I am going through withdrawal! :-)

Good Luck on any trips you have left this year. Hopefully we will get on some trips next year and be able to see you again.

Or as soon as the schedule comes out;) You may start out in your spot, but you NEVER stay there during the trip and it really doesn't matter. Sometimes you can't get in without getting picked up by a moving tuna--I just wait 'cause you'll most likely have to re-rig again in, especially in a "cluster-f#@k" tangle...just my 2 cents.....
