So what is this little guy? Could it be a Jack Crevale? My nephew has caught several in the cast net in the back of the Manasquan river.

Your thumb looks to be covering the spot that they don't lose... I say jack crevalle ...

I caught one about 8" in Port Monmouth in my cast net two weeks ago.

That's a jack, they will hit small sabiki rigs too. I've livedlined them several times and have caught some solid fluke and a 50ish pound brown shark on a party boat fluking a few years back.

Thanks guys, I wish I had a better picture but I wasn't with him when he took it... I didn't think they were up this far north.

We have been cast netting them for several years at the top of the Manasquan. I thought they may be juvenile pompano, as my friend also caught an 8# just the same in the river, and the adult looks like a pompano. We are also netting another southern species that swims with the peanuts and mullets. This one has black and white vertical stripes, with hump on head and an inferior mouth like a king fish. They are approx. 3-6inches now. I'm thinking sheepshead.

some kind of a jack..
when I was a little kid and we'd snapper fish up in Will's hole we'd catch a few of those - this was 30 + years ago.
Jack crevalle, barjack, blue runner - one of those - they've been around obviously for quite some time... The big ones just never show!

If you get another one post up a picture or shoot me a pm so I can ask my nephew if he's catching them too.

TJD 24, I think you called it. I googled up "juvenile black drum ", and there it was. We have been netting them as they swim with mullets. Size is 4-6inch. Although the coloring is like Sheepshead, the inferior mouth gives it away. Thanks for your input............Papa
