Had very high expectations Friday as we had a great group of regulars on ready to put the screws to some fluke - the bite's been good and some of these guys have missed out because of work and other commitments.
Took the ride down the beach, had a light NE at our backs. Got set up around 7, and had immediate action despite a very fast drift (1.7 to start). First drift we had ~20 shorts and 2 keepers - drift was a mile long. Went back up and did it again, and had maybe a dozen shorts and 1 keeper. Third drift, wind shifted almost dead east, a big swell started driving through, and fishing got VERY difficult. Drift was up over 2kts, and the seas were getting a little lumpy. We stuck it out, but couldn't get it to happen as we were FLYING.
Moved inshore, up the line, still the same stuff as the drift was insanely fast and seas were building.
By around 11, we retreated to the river to finish up the trip there as did some of the fleet that was outside -- wound up pulling about 2 dozen shorts out of the river and got 2 more keepers + a nice blowfish.
Very disappointing day, only 5 keepers and around 50 shorts + the blowfish for us. Weather was the factor today, as there wasn't really much we could do outside (would've loved to have anchored but the fish were very spread out). Back at it tomorrow!
