This is the second year ive caught these great tasting jacks and mahi on the fluke grounds. Its cool to see these fish inshore thy put up a great fight. Not sure why theyre over 10 miles instead of in the deep but its cool to catch em.

High water temps might have something to do with them being in so close.

We saw those "jacks" in force last year a couple of times. I don't think they're jacks, forgot what the mate called them. I do remember it being a strange name. Good sign, bones should be here in numbers very soon.

Here we go again :) Is it a juvenile amberjack, almaco jack or banded rudderfish ?? This should be good for at least 30 opinions !!! I'll let this run a bit.

Nice to see these fish inshore... This the season and by the looks of some of the temp shots I've seen we could be in for for some great mid grounds fishing.
Another NJFer reported catching a White Marlin in the Glory Hole too http://www.njfishing.com/forums/showthread.php?t=81900

They always come in that far and even closer from late July to early Sept. Mahi can be as close as 2 miles off and rudderfish can be inside the inlets.

Yes I’ve caught small rudderfish in the surf running around w/ shcools of small bluefish in the mid-late summer.
They’re fun!
Any good to eat?

Yes, just trim out all of the red meat and the fillet is very white and good. The red can be very gamey !

Are the banded rudders edible. Stripped ou a couple last year to use for fluke, but nothing touched them.

Looks like I'm hitting the ocean this weekend... Speaking of both fish, I caught a chicken Mahi on the squan jetty 4 summers ago in august on a small crippled herring. Can't wait for the weird shit I get in my cast net this weekend looking bait.
