what's worst than loosing a big fish? Let me tell you...

I hit the river after work again, pretty amped up from Monday. I knew I could be gone before the weather system. Had my trusty homemade frankenspinner tied on my bait caster. Right off the bat a swipe and miss and then nailed a nice 28" that's always fun hand to hand battle style fishing.

Next I got a cast right where I wanted I knew a pike would be waiting there...my lure gets demolished and comes to a dead stop! For a split second nothing gives way and my rod explodes in my face! I scrambled and grabbed the loose line and looked up to see a massive pale pike belly turn and flash me before disappearing. I bring in the line and the titanium Nickel leader is cut...I hear a slash behind me coupled with a jingling that sounds familiarly like the sound my frankenspinner makes when I pull it out of the water to cast.

Then again it comes up, this time I see the massive head toss my lure out of its mouth...I'm not sure how my rod and leader both broke and I'm glad this beast threw the lure eventually unharmed, but this was the most devastating thing I've experienced fishing in a long time haha! I won't estimate the size but it was hands down the biggest pike I've ever seen in person.

I will make more frankenspinners and I will find the beast that destroyed one of my favorite rods! That rod landed me my biggest musky 47" and many other nice fish. I learned to bait cast on that rod...you will be avenged my old friend!

Man,

Nothing beats "the one that got away stories"

Strange how those stories stick in our memories more than the ones where we actually landed the fish

You'll get him Chris he wont be enjoying his advantage for long

I thought this was gonna be a story about you having nightmares of repeatedly netting my fish all night!!! Lol jk...

In all seriousness, sounds like a true battle! Regroup, reload, and hopefully we'll be seeing beast pics before too long! When pike fishing on the P, I only use my medium heavy ugly stick. It'll never blow up!

Hahaha well it was a decent shimano, but maybe I'll go your route. It'll save me some money too I guess. I can't even find my paperwork to see if they actually honor the lifetime warranty on their rods.

Sorry to hear about the lost beast, you'll get him next time!

On a side note, are the leaders you are using multistrand? On multistrsnd leaders, if just one or two of the strands break the leader drastically loses its strength. That's why I prefer single strand. At least the fish shook the lure. I use fluoro, and had a bite off the other day so I may be adding a short piece of wire to my setup. Out of countless numbers of pike, I have only had two biteoffs (one of them I retrieved the lure and retried and caught the fish), so it's rare for me, but I don't want to risk it again.

60 lb fluoro or better should suffice.

That's a crazy cool fish story. I'm sure you'll get that pike next time. Now you know where she lives!

No I don't like that multi strand stuff it's bulky and like said gets frayed. I use nickel titanium single strand wire leader and I've never snapped it before. In fact I once snapped the eagle claw swivel I was using on it once (wont use eagle claw since that if I can avoid it). All I can guess is that both the rod and leader had been damaged at some point and I didn't notice. Like I said, dragged in a 47" musky on that exact entire setup...I was totally baffled when everything busted on me...I'm not saying it was bigger than that musky but it was a huge fish!

RIVER fish are just tougher than lake fish cause they have to live with the flowage 247.

Combed the area over again today but no sign of the beast...I think rob scooped it up while I was at work! Hahaha.

I got a few pike up to 29" but not what I was after...
