Well, well, well, It looks like It's that time of year again! Back by popular demand, NJ's one and only PIKE-A-THON! Are you ready to catch some teeth? Show me them teeth! Don't be SKEERED! This will be the 3rd year that PIKE-A-THON will be held and it gets better every year. Thanx to all that participated in the previous years.

I'm going to stir the pot this year and see what NJ Pike waters really have to offer. This year will include all "PUBLIC NJ PIKE WATERS". I want to see whats going on with all these beautiful Pike lakes we have in NJ. Will a lake or reservoir take TOP DOLLAR? Will the one and only Passaic river show a true BEAST of a river Pike? I guess we'll all have to wait and see.

Here's the deal! The contest will be 9 days long this year to give anglers a chance to get out there and catch the biggest Pike NJ has to offer. This contest is open to all anglers, whether it be bank beaters, river walkers, kayakers, boaters or whatever else. I want you to join in the fun and show me those TEETH!!!! All NJ public stocked lakes, reservoirs and rivers are open game to anyone wishing to fish this contest. These waterbodies include Spruce Run, Cranberry lake, Pompton lake, Budd lake, Passaic river, Pompton river and the Millstone river if you dare to try that area. If I'm forgetting a NJ public Pike lake or river please feel free to name it. Again this contest is open to all anglers whatever your game is. C'mon and enter the contest and show me what you got!

Here are the rules:

-One winner takes all and will be the 2015 PIKE-A-THON CHAMPION.

-Longest PIKE entered wins the CA$H!!!

-Entry fee will be 20 bucks per man. The entry fee can be mailed to me. I will send you my contact info via PM, text or a simple phone call.

-If you chose not to pay your entry fee via mail then you must meet me at the Dundee lake access on June 27th to hand me the 20 dollar entry fee. I will be there from 7-9 am just to collect cash from the anglers that forget to mail the check or money order.

-All Pike entered in this contest must be caught in NJ "PUBLIC PIKE WATERS"!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

-2 photos will be required for your entry to count. 1st photo must include the Pike laid down as flat as possible next to a legitimate tape measure to show length. No paper tapes guys and gals. Contractor type tape measuring devices, bumper boards and the good ole NJF boat sticker tape measure will do. Again, "NO PAPER TAPES"!

-The 2nd photo must include the angler that caught the fish holding the fish with some water in the background. No blackout or edited pics will be excepted!

-There will be a mystery item that must be included with at least one of the 2 pics required. If you don't have the mystery item in at least one pic, your entry will "NOT" count. This mystery item will be announced sometime Friday, June 26th after dark. If you do not have this item in one of the pics, "YOU ARE SCREWED"!!! On that note, pay attention and look for the "MYSTERY ITEM ANNOUNCEMENT"!!!!!!

I'm putting the mark on the calendar. Last year I could only fish one day and couldn't buy a fish. This year I will at least catch one.

I understand the rules and why we need them to keep people honest. Shame on those that cheat to win a friendly contest. But to quote George Thorogood, "I fish alone" so getting a picture with me and the fish in it is going to be tough. But I'm in it for the fun and a small donation to make it interesting is no big deal.

It's definately not easy getting a length pic on your kayak and then a selfie of you holding the fish. Anglers in the boats have the advantage there. Awesome! What kinds Yak did you pick up? Sure is peaceful and quiet when your out there in the Yak finding new waters. Just watch out for the trees in some stretches of the river. Trying to jump over them while your sitting in a yak and paddling as fast as you can just doesn't go well sometimes, LOL!

It looks like we might have a rough start to this contest with some rain in the forecast for the entire weekend. I will take the ride to the Dundee Lake access rain or shine! Hey guys. I have never caught a pike before, but I am interested in learning. Would someone be kind enough to let me tag along with them. Don't want to impinge on "secret spots", just want to learn basic techniques.

I tried live lining shiners where Black Brook enters Spruce Run Reservoir a couple times the first week of April and had no luck. Would be happy to catch a pike regardless of size.

Well I went out on my kayak for the first time today and of course for the pikeathon. Only got one pike. Did not want to measure it because I didnt feel like it was contest worthy. But it gave a good fight and here's the pic. Prob 25-27 inches.

I fished 2 spots so far today and just got home to dry out a bit. Spot one I fished from 9 to 11 or so landing 4 Pike over 30 inches but losing a 35 inch or better fish when it spit the hook, darn! The fish was pretty fat but she got away.

Spot 2 produced 3 more Pike 30 inches or better but again another big fish lost. It was my last cast of the afternoon and BOOM, I get railed. I see the flash in the water and its a pretty long fish, longer than the fish from spot 1. All of the sudden it feels like my line hits something and POOF, the Pike is gone, GRRRRRRRRRRRR!!! Cant land every fish I guess. Pretty good day of catching despite the cooler temps and annoying rain. 7 pike landed for the day. Heres a couple of the 30 inchers from today.

Well, got out today after the rain stopped and caught a few more Pike but nothing huge landed or hooked. Most waters were off color of course but there were a few areas that produced some fish. Nothing to brag about today. Landed 3, 1 @ 31 inches and 2 @ 24 inches or so. It'll take a couple days for the river to go back to it's normal brown color. At least we didn't get hammered and completely blown out.

Went today to a spot where I had them yesterday that produces in poor conditions. Not a monster at 29.5" but certainly a lot of fun, especially after the rain last night. FYI, I wet the ground with spring water prior to laying the fish down to prevent any slime loss.

WHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO-HOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!! Must be nice when you can get out and whack a big Pike on your lunch break. Hit the river for an hour today and yes it was high, yes it was almost unfishable, yes its as dirty as it gets. But 1 Pike decided she was hungry today. What a battle! Fish hit a 9 inch plug after a little twitch, twitch. All of the sudden, BOOM!!! This fish was all over the river jumping like a complete maniac. The aerial show was a sight to see. Finally I get the fish in the net and the damn net breaks and the fish almost flops back into the river. No, oh no, I'm saying to myself. Your not getting away from me you sexy Pike. Yep, I tackled her to the ground and got all banged up in the process. Put her back in the water while i goy my water, tape and Camera ready. All this while holding her by the tail so she wouldn't get stressed. Unbelievable!!! I need a new net, a bigger net! Here's the pics of the 36 1/2. The fight was nutz! Get out there guyz and girlz! The Pike have been hitting hard for over 3 weeks already.

And FINALLY I am able to say I did battle with my first pike! :D But, unfortunately, my first battle ended up with a spit hook at the boat. Fish looked to be around 26". Oh well. Got a few follows after that and then was throwing around a popper near some weeds when it got "smashed"! Got a good laugh in and landed a dinky 16" pike which is now technically my first pike. Well hey, gotta start somewhere right?? :p I'm just glad to have finally hooked up with something!

Banks lined with not only poison ivy, but stinging nettle and tree roots ready to trip you up. When I go there, I'm wearing gear made for jungle combat!

They're done spawning for sure. This one has been in the river for a while. First time I caught her was 6-7 years ago and her tail was the same then as it is now. Also one of the thickest fish in this stretch. Water was cool to the touch where I was fishing.

Due to work, home and family obligations I could only reserve 2 evenings to get a shot at a pike for this years pike-o-thon. I had to stay local so I spent the last 2 evenings on the same waters where our Ice Fishing Contest's biggest pike was caught. Last night I had the skunk, went back this evening with a different game plan and ended up with a pair of bass to 18". So I'm throwing in the towel and headed to the beach for the 4th. Our best pike veterans have a couple good fish on the board but I'm hoping to see a 40"+ fish posted up here by Sunday. Just got home from the P. Fished from 12 -3 this afternoon. Water is still high but I managed to land 4 cute little Pike. 2 @ 30 inches or so, 2 around 24 inches. Very subtle bites in the high water but when hooked the battle is intense. Got get em fellaz!

It's quite the task to get a fish over 36 inches in our little state, however, there sure are a load of fish from 30-36 inches. Caught a few more Pike today but nothing spectacular. All fish were nice and plump!

Got some photos from yesterday and today. Got one at 18" yesterday on the FIRST CAST of the day and then nothing the rest of the day. Got out again today and landed a 22" and 20". Nothing big yet, but at least I'm catching! My goal is for something over 30" now, hope to land it before Sunday!

So far I fished 3 Days this week including one with Rottilover in Pompton and Passaic Rivers with only one Pecker head@ 26inches. Im trying like hell for some quantity and quality but just hast happened yet. Gonna get out I one more time on Sunday for the Pike-a thon. My wife will not speak to me for me for a week if I abandon her today.. Way to go Cabesa nice start to your Pike career.

Got some photos from yesterday and today. Got one at 18" yesterday on the FIRST CAST of the day and then nothing the rest of the day. Got out again today and landed a 22" and 20". Nothing big yet, but at least I'm catching! My goal is for something over 30" now, hope to land it before Sunday!

How insane is it on those first cast/first fish days you end up striking out the rest of the day?????? It's happened to me dozens of times!!!!!!

I had a pretty good morning today but none of the big girls wanted to play. Hit 2 spots and landed 4 pike and lost a pretty good one, but not bigger than Eddies. All 4 were in the upper 20's and all good looking fish. think I am hitting the salt water tomorrow, so I may be done for the contesgreat job Eddie, ..........now someone go out tomorrow and get that 40 !!!!!

Got out for some rainy day Piking with FastEddie, Bling306 and Mistah. Not a crazy day, Eddie started it off with a nice 4lb+ LMB that crushed a topwater, followed by an acrobatic Pike that spit the hook while freaking out at the kayak. Tried a new area and I got on the board with 2 fish, a 33.5" and a 27". Big Relax swimshad did the damage.

Got out for a little while today. Had a couple of pike between 22 and 30". The river is not at the usual summer lows but is still very fishable. The rain today didn't do much at all.

Nice fish everyone! Got out today as well but ended up with only a few little smallies on the spinnerbait. Unfortunately I won't be able to go out tomorrow because of a family barbecue, so I guess it's time for me to throw in the white towel. Maybe one of these days I'll get one over 30, but before I go searching for that fish again I think I need to spend some time fishing for a more productive species instead of throwing baits for 6-7 hours only to get 1-2 fish.

UNBELIEVABLE!!!

Today I missed the biggest Pike of my life in a stretch of river that hasn't been stocked for years according to NJF&G. I was twitching my plug and all of the sudden a fish comes out of the water for it jumping about 4-5 feet into the air but doesn't come tight. The lure flies 20 or so feet in the air and lands in a damn tree. The fish was an estimated 42-44 inches with the girth that I've never seen in an NJ river before. This was the first 20+ lb Pike I've seen in person other than Jigman13's MONSTER caught out of no name lake 2 years ago through the ice. This fish jumped out of the water right next to me and I was shaking like a leaf after witnessing the sheer size of this RIVER MONSTER! Am I upset I didn't catch her? Of course!!! But, I know where she lives for next time. The amount of Pike in certain stretches of the river is amazing. This fish was far, far away from any stocking point. I may have to contact the state on this one because I know certain stretches should be stocked more than others. Mark B, Shawn Crouse, you guys might be very interested in the info I have on the Passaic river.

Fish of a lifetime is still swimming strong. I did manage to land 2 Pike today. 1 @ 28 inches and another @ 30 inches. Over all I managed to catch about 75 Pike in the last 3 weeks with the majority of them being over 30 inches. What a great early summer it has been on the river! The fish are happy, healthy and thriving on the MIGHTY P!!!

Hit the river for a little while this morning. Pulled the hooks on a fish and ended up this this flawless beauty. Didn't measure her because I knew there was no way she was going to beat Eddie's fish, but I would estimate right around 30". Had a blast fishing the tournament! Plenty of action on the few days I fished, but no monsters.

Congratulations and thanks for putting this together Eddie. I tried again yesterday morning for a couple of hours and had a 28 inch and a solid, fat 32 inch pike in my first 10 casts. Only one 30 inch pike after that. I wound up getting on the river 4 times during the contest with a total of 14 pike landed......but the biggest of 32 inches just didn't make the cut.

Thanx Dan! Sure was a blast catching these toothy critters the last couple of weeks. They are doing quite well on the P! Vicious strikes, aerial shows and drag ripping are the things that keeps me interested in this fishery.

I'll be happy to take the PIKE-A-THON 3 title once again. Going strong for 3 years with another river master, "Skunk City" right up my arse once again. The pike belt was defended...... this time.

What can I say .... no pike was landed by me during that time. My mouth was bigger than my skills so my hat is off to you fellas.

While pike was sighted on multiple occasions, was not able to have it strike home.

That's okay though your reign will not last for long. Mark my words.

So all I have to show for the pike a thon are biggest snappers I have ever caught. If anyone has a recipe for turtle soup I will need that since the next one I get is done.

True dat. They are fish which can reach true trophy size which is why we seek them but the effort to get them often does not pay off. More trips don't produce then do and I hate putting max effort in for zero reward. Generally speaking if I put the effort it, I get rewarded. Whether it be getting up at 4:30am or fishing in the rain or hiking 2 miles to fish a spot. Effort pays off. Not so much pike.

Thank you to all who participated in our 3rd Annual Pike-a-thon. River conditions made things a little tougher than it usually is this time of year, but plenty of fish were caught. Had the pleasure of Piking with some of my best buds, including Bling306, Mistah, Marcin and last but not least the UNDISPUTED RIVER KING, Eddie. This guy manages to be a true ambassador for NJF, organize these tournaments and get togethers, all while balancing a family with 2 young kids and his own business! Though we were neck and neck for the week, if anyone (besides myself :p) deserves to win this thing, it is Eddie! Congrats buddy!
