Loaded boat with ice, bait, etc but had no radar. Left dock in Bayonne at 5:30AM. Never got out past Kill Van Kull into NY Harbor. Pea soup with Container ships coming into Kill that we couldn't see until they were a few hundred feet away. Waited for 3 hours and called it quits.
NWS calls for same tomorrow.

If it's anything like it was today (which is what they're calling for) stay home.

I'm gonna push it up two hours. Leave my house at seven in stead of five.

And duff, that hurts me. Any landing you can walk away from is a good landing:p

Fog is nothing to f_ _ k around with especially up around the hook with all the channels and boat traffic. You'd be out of your mind even with the benefit of radar going tomorrow if it's anything like what I hear it was like today. If you've never been caught in fog before, believe me it's nothing to take lightly. Plan for a later departure or take the day off, nothing is worth putting you and your crew at risk in those conditions. You can become disoriented in thick fog in a heart beat and it's not just your vessel you need to be concerned about, it's the other idiots running at 20 knots with 10 feet visibility! Believe me it happens. The seasons just started, makes no sense to take unnecessary risks if given the option. Getting caught in fog on the way back in you can't control, going out in it is asking for trouble.

^^ what he said. I'm not far from Morgan and the fog is pretty thick inland. It will clear but don't get too anxious and "go for it".

Was out last night fishing the SI tuna Club 3 Day striper tournament. Fogged rolled in on us at 12:30 am and withen a minute you can see nothing. Luckily our Capt is a pro and got us home safe.

If u have little or no experance running the fog , especially w/o radar I would not go unless ur with an experanced guy .
Years ago we did it frequently worked off charts , sounder , but we generally went to a given location so we could plot our courses from this region.
Nothing more scary than to have a tanker appear so close to u w/o hearing them.
This we ecountered frequently in the SH region when rip fishing was good. Knowing ur position is critical & if u don't understand the basics don't go.
We ran off yesterday in pea soup to Cod grounds , however proper electronics & experienced Captain in these conditions R A must !
Don't forget hitting an floating object chances go up dramatically even with radar they do not show up , if limited experance I would not go until I gained some confidence & much needed experance.
Even with radar u must understand what ur looking at & need to interpret even with radar it's not always the panacea u envision .
When I first used the radar I use to plot to a known buoy & verify my position then proceed to next buoy en route again to verify my position & gain confidence that my plotting using the radar was spot on, very little room for error if u find ur self in close quarters or in shipping lanes .

Very easy to get disoriented in dense fog. Knowing where you are, what general compass heading to run to your destination, a chart plotter and radar are practically musts.

Had a good day today caught a lot of big blues on the troll and anchored up probably had 30'or so a lot of fun on light tackle.

First time that I've had to use my radar and it worked great and was happy to have it today. Fog lifted for most of day where it was safe to navigate but rolled back in around 5:00 when we headed in. It was nice to see all boats running slow today

Be safe out there guys👍🏻👍🏻

Was not too bad. Worst was about 1/4 mile visability. Can you say Bluefish? All you wanted in the bay.. Temps were down to 58 near the reach channel.
