4-23-15 Lots of wind today,,but it was out of the west and the ocean was actually pretty decent...NIce day out and we had overall pretty good life on the bottom despite the past three days of a large swell offshore...Loads of bites as soon as you got down,,,the perch were frisky to say the least,,,,in between you weeded through and we had quite a few codfish come over the rail,,,alot of them were small but we also had some nice fish as you can see in the pics below,,we even busted off some slobs that we never got out of the rocks,,gonna have to work on that tomorrow!!!We also had quite a few pollocks,,,,both large and small,,some blackfish again,,,handful of ling...decent day I thought,,,look forward to getting back out tomorrow,,,,we are fishing!!Already got some guys itching so go so see ya in the morning for coffee!!!pics!!

Bobby, I have to ask this since you have mentioned it more than once about people busting off big fish. Why is that? This is cod fishing, not ling-cbass-fluke fishing! Fish with the right gear. My buddy Captain from Md. has said numerous time, one can't wear 2 watches! I can't talk about todays cod fishing but when I did it back in the late '70's thru the early '90's one fished with 40 pink Ande main line and 60-80 snelled leader with one hook, hip high. We-I pulled hooks but we didn't bust them off. I did bust off a Jumbo once to set the record straight but that was because I didn't check my snelled leader after landing a 60 pounder on the Starship back in '86. I do have a Video of it to backup my fish tale, too. lol The sharpies that I know today who still fish for cod swear by Mono over braid because of the stretch, a lot more forgiving when a slob wants to go back south! No braid or a top shot of 50+feet n 1 hook. If one wants ling then go ling fishing. One waits all day for the right fish and then that happens, OMG!! Dennis

This could be a deep subject!!!and a long one,,but good point Dennis....on the boat I see so many different set ups that it be long winded of me to describe them all...but alot depends on structure,,and yes braid....lots of rebarb and big pieces of concrete we have been fishing lately....mono does help if you have enough of it in front of the braid,,,big wrecks a different story,,,50 ft. of mono might not be enough if your fishing structure that has alot of relief,,,nicks in line,,,,small hooks vs..big hooks,,,whole clams vs.small baits,,,,teasers,,,flouro,,,,,......etc....deep subject.....

So so very true, we could go on forever about what is Best for every situation. That being said, if folks want dinner then they have to play the odds hopefully they don't get their Hearts broken when "The One" bites! I once got Screamed at by Capt Al for losing a big cod! I was using a red teaser n he Blamed that!! WTF He had No Problem cursing or screaming at anybody as u know. Dennis

Its called OPERATOR error.....

Maybe had something to do with those glass rods everybody used back then. Now, I see graphite everything. I watched a friend of mine once, standing few feet away from me, using one of those white or green shimano something rods. Swinging fast and hard, short top shot, or no top shot at all. But, you couldn't tell him anything..........your right though, operator error.
