View Full Version : This used to be the time of year to get excited for flounder...

I remember crushing them at the slack in the rivers via boat, 30-40 fish days from the Rum Runner parking lot in Sea Bright, and seeding the Marine Park pier in Red Bank overnight with cat and rabbit food and corn before coming back at the morning high slack to put a beating on them in late March. The Red Bank area was the first to go.

Just venting as really want to get out for flounder in Highlands area but the 2 fish deal isn't worth the effort. Hope the Angler goes for ling soon and those nice 2-3# ocean fish are a nice bonus to spice the catch.

Yes, my superior skill and unrestrained greed decimated our flounder stocks. Those 3 trips a year added up over the decade of flounder erotica. AND, it was infectious. People whom saw me pillage the village joined in the savagery, overtaken by the bloodlust for those sillky white bottom sided fish.

Oh...the memories of a bye gone era....

I definitely miss spring winter flounder fishing. It is a tradition now lost!

I miss it as well. Picking the right day, tide and location lots of chum and salted mussels and putting triple digits in the boat a handful of times a year.
Fishery was and continues to be destroyed by off shore draggers in the summer who now get them and keep them as by catch in each trawl
The elimination of recreational winter flounder season has to have hurt the NJ party boat, rental bost and B&T business. Everything now starts a month or more later
Too bad. Would be great if they had a two week season in April with a 15 fish limit. Would be good for everyone and have no impact on fishery as on the two weeks may be 3 tops 4 days where weather, tide and temps conspire to make things productive

Whoa, didn't realize I was channeling the ghost?

If ye shall call upon his works, He shall appear. ;)

Let's round up the group and get a ling trip going at Scotland and grab some snowshoes in the catch.

I'm embarrased to admit I too was part of the Flounder decimation that occurred in those bye gone years. Every year right around this time, a few of us would target them for a trip or 2 before the Stripers showed up. We'd catch and keep a dozen between 3 or 4 of us on each trip.

Oh the humanity!! How selfish and wreckless we were

Our children must pay for the sins of their parents!!! I too caught my fair share of flounder back in the late 80's!!! I guess those 100 flounder every year could have saved the stock. I feel so dirty now!!! LOL

We burried some Bluefish racks in the garden one year..... Our next door neighbor did not like that so much.... The garden was right next to his yard and under his bedroom window :D

Who is up for a flounder Patrick?

I have always been around just don't post much anymore and have rediscovered fresh water fishing on the mighty Passaic

We caught 78 on one tide. It was about 1985 in the North Channel at Shark River. They turned on like a light and we had non stop doubles for 20 minutes.

And they were all fat 13" plus keepers.

Mmmmm-mmmm Goood!

I am game, but JPL still checks the closet and under the bed after the last Patrick.
