Getting close to enough sign ups so Lets do this. Current List on first post and when its official I will honor this as a boarding list.

I am planning (due to varying popular demand) on making this the 12 hour (5AM to 5PM) Trip. Guess we are all getting a little older lol.

Will make the sign up official as soon as possible as I think we will easily get 30.

OK I will be the one to ask since no one else has. What exactly is "safari style fishing"? It sounds like you will steam around until you find fish, if you find fish. I would rather be on the second trip.:)

Rentalrod:
Actually just the difference between the "inshore" 3/4 day trip and the "offshore" 30 -40 mile wreck trip with "safari" being the latter. In any type of "wreck" or "bottom" fishing there will be some "steaming" but that is not the definition in this case. I am sure Capt Bob has a game plan and wrecks or open bottom spots in mind.

Trip starting to shape up/ Quite an all star cast already but Larry Hartattack and crew take the prize (you cant make this stuff up).

Larry and crew have enlisted Sister Dot to join us for some divine intervention and bring the Cod to the boat. No pressure at all Sister:D

Larry exact quote via email:"Should be interesting having Sister Dot aboard. She’s a Party Boat veteran. She’ll be trading in her Nun’s Habit for Grundens " :-o

Better fish hard as I also heard she may have ruler (not to measure your fish but to crack your knuckles if you get out of line!)

Oh and yes she goes right to the top on the boarding order! Any complaints there you will have to take it to higher level.

OK we have reached a trusted sign up level so the trip is GAME ON. The first post on this thread is the official sign up list and current boarding order. Two weeks until we Sail and Cod fishing has been pretty good for the few that have been out. Not a lot of pressure on the offshore wrecks so anticipation is high but always is with fishing.

Pay Pal Payment will be set-up soon (hopefully Monday)on RFA-NJ site and for those who want to pay by check see link on first page which is available now.

With all the "regulations" talk being posted this would be a good trip to go on and discuss any of your concerns. RFA-NJ Chapter board chairman and members will be on board. Or we just FISH

As stated Raffles prizes are tough to come by this early in the season and while I always appreciate the Sponser tackle shops, and for hire contributions I think I will leave them alone until the season gets under way and they can see how their business is doing. Having said that 50/50 will be run, lunch and Drink will be provided and you know Capt Bob will do his best. I will also check with Capt on Galley for Breakfast availability.

Looking forward as always to fishing with this great group!

Typical deeper ground fish setup ... Don't get your hopes up just be ready... 10-24 oz of lead with some teasers and a rag to wipe off the clam crud from your digits...have teasers on hand to rig

Look in Fishing Tips forum. Leif and some others have posted some great articles on this.

One of Leif's copied below:

You can take advantage of all species by considering the following recommendations:

PREPARATION IS KEY:

Proper rod and reel

20-50lb 7-8ft rod equiped with a suitable reel like a Penn Jigmaster or 4/0 sized reel loaded with new 30-40lb mono or 65lb braid.

Do not bring a traditional spinning outfit on these trips. You are wasting your time and others. The exceptions are the new "hightech" rods and reels which are small, light and very strong and expensive)

Cod rigs:

High /Low 2 hook Cod rig 80lb leader 7/0 Gamakatsu Octopus hooks on 6in dropper loops.
I use 6 inch Pink Tsunami Squids or Pink ,red or glow 3-4 inch skirts

Pollock rigs:

10-12 oz Jigs tied on 80lb leader with a tube type teaser tied 2 feet above on a 6 inch dropper or tied in with 2 clinch knots. (Some nice pollock have been caught on bait as well on the high hook using squid or clam.) Use the same type of Cod rig, but with just one hook tied 4 ft above the sinker and try a whole Squid.

Ling rigs:

One 1/0-3/0 snelled Gamakatsu Circle Hook or J hook tied on 10in of 50lb test right above the sinker. Use small baits!! Just the string part of the clam or siphon part. You WILL catch lots of ling if they are there.

Cod /Pollock/ ling rigs (everything rig)

This rig will give you the best shot at whats out there. This may be the most productive rig for this type of trip. Simply a 2 hook rig tied on 60lb. leader material. One 6/0-7/0 Gamakatsu or other very sharp hook tied on a 6in dropper with choice of teaser 3-4 feet above the sinker. The second hook is a Gamakatsu or similar 2/0-3/0 Circle hook or J Hook with a small piece of clam on it. (Strings or siphon or small strip) The High hook will catch Cod or Pollock. The small hook will catch ling. If the small hook gets stuck pull hard and it will bend out. Also circle hooks seem to get stuck less and the ling will hook themselves. The small bait insures the ling will suck it in and get hooked.

I noticed the guys that caught a varitey of fish were using a rig similar to the one above. Because you never know what your going to get, this may be a good choice. You can change the rig by using 3/0-5/0 hooks as well. This way you have a better chance to land a cod if you get one on the bottom hook but may increase your odds of getting stuck as well.

Sinkers

I use 8-20oz Bank or Flat on these trips. Mostly 10-14oz. I have been using the flat sinkers on the last three trips and only lost one. That includes the kids as well. It may be a coincidence but I like the flats sinkers.

Tips

1) If the Dogfish are around and you can't deal with them take off the teaser or just fish the bottom hook and use clam only.

2) Prepare in advance. Have all your rigs ready and organized seperately. I use little zip-lock bags so the rigs don't tangle. Check your reel, line rod, ect. Properly functioning equipment saves time and makes the trip more enjoyable.

3) Check the weather, moon, overall forecast and dress appropriately. Full moon, new moon= in most cases stronger current and requires heavier sinkers.

4) Ask questions, the mates will be glad to explain and help if you ask. They are here to help. If you don't ask you won't get an answer.

5) Have realistic expectations and expect to change your strategy. These wreck trips have a lot of variables. Some trips are good some are bad. That is Winter fishing in general, It's been like that for years. Most of these spots have some life on them and in some cases a good batch of ling will save the day. I feel that if I catch one or two cod and few ling, that is a good trip. Add a Pollock and its a great one.

6) I have been having success with the pink tsunami 6in squids and the Pink/Red skirts on the droppers. Give them a try. Any comments or questions are welcome. I am open to learn as well. I just like to fish and share what I know so other people will go and be successful.

OK Boys and Gal,
Thread has gone a little "Lame" Lets get excited here. Looks like we are tapped out at 35-37 plus myself and Jim K (RFA-NJ Chair) . Thank YOU

Up to 10 Walk ons will be welcome but CASH ONLY and no guarantee on lunch

We are shaping up for departure Sat 5AM. Been talking to Capt Bobby and he is working on the Game Plan. Not going to mention the "W" word but looks OK, NW is best! Ok so I'll mention it a little:eek:

Boarding Order is as listed in first post: NO RODS anywhere on the Boat until your name is called. Feel free however to stow all your clothes bags, coolers etc in the cabin when you arrive. This will keep the parking area more clear and save time to get going as soon as everyone boards. Boarding order will start to be called at 4:45 AM. If you are not there then you will be passed over to the next angler that is there. Unless I am late then it all changes;)

It is way to quiet. No trash talk? No Shrimpman? No Joeythefish? No Odds? I have been looking forward to this trip since the poll. By the way I would like to sign up for the fluke-a-thon now so I can be first on the list. Weather looks good for tomorrow. See all in the AM. :D

just a heads up.gold jigs have made a huge difference the last 3 weeks.also
most of the bigger cod have been spitting up small sea bass{3-4"} so dark
colored teasers have been very effective.on some days they want a slow retrieve instead of vertical jigging.see ya all in the morning.

Decent day on the RFA trip. The Gambler as usual top notch service. Dale529. Thank you for the invite we had a blast. I only drank two beers all day. 😂😂

Great trip, awesome peeps, terrific boat - with typical RFA results: a few Cod, more Pollack than Cod, numerous dogfish/bergalls. First stop was 35 miles East where we plucked a few. Steamed East another 20 miles East where we finished up our day in some deeper water. Jigs produced the larger fish including an impressive 25+ pound Pollack for Scrubby.
My crew put together quite a variety today - Cod, Pollack, Ling, one nice Sea Raven (JMurr Philly delicacy) and Grateful Dad managed to pull up a good sized LOBSTER
Thanks again Dales for going the extra mile to make it happen, & thanks again Captain Bob for going the extra mileS for this great cause. Already looking fwd to the July RFA Flukathon :)

They weren't too bad, I had one pisser though when we just pulled up a pollock then a cod, then I have a good feeling fish on and call for the net: it was a doggie:mad:... He did get a free nose job though:D

Nice day on the water with a good crew. We could've used a few more fish, but at least we went home with some good eats. I credit my catching a lobster with fishing next to my good luck charm Sister Dot. She didn't have a great day, but she stayed at the rail all day and fished her butt off.

Grateful dad, I love your handle. I hope Sis didn't get skunked?
Sounds like a wonderful day on the water w/ great peeps!

Well another "groundhog day" RFA Trip wrap up post. Could probably just cut and paste from previous years! Great Boat, Great people and some fish blah blah but seriously its true. The Anglers make this trip everytime.

Thanks again to All that came out and as always Capt Bobby , Mike,, Chris and Todd gave us exceptional service on the GAMBLER one the best fishing platforms on the water. 55 miles and felt like we were fishing in the river.

Caddishack Jeff Sr and Salt Life Jeff Jr I am pretty sure have attended every RFA Trip since the beginning and always a pleasure to fish with. Saltlife always seems to get a good one too.
Larry Hartattack should change his screen name to Heart of gold. Jay, Steve and Crew add to the fun every time. These guys know how to do it.
Also great meeting some new people in person.
Bunker Dunker and son a class act (well son anyway:D) Quite a fishing team and Ranger fans so what else is there.
Grateful Dad and Sister Dot teamed up for a nice mixed bag, yes Larry I think you got one too.
RS Mako had a nice Cod on the other side of us and Ralph from our crew had a close second Pollack.
DFish, Ahab, Aduma and all the rest didn't see what you guys did on the other side of the boat but heard it was pretty good.

Lots of laughs as always and left satisfied that we ran a good trip and it was well worth it for all.

Congrats Scrubby on the pool and the small 50/50! Nice fishing next to you and discussing the pleasures of the devil / Rangers rivalry:cool:

No one ever throws back a good sized sea raven once they try it. Tastes like monkfish tail to me.
