I recently acquired a beautiful Calstar E-glass custom rod I think it was rated 20-30lb. The rod has amazing sensitivity and decent backbone with bend all the way through rod.
Question is at 6'6" does the board feel this is to small for blackfish?? I have only used rods 7'6" before and over past couple weeks notice as a whole longer rods are used for Tog.
Further more what is the advantage to longer rod vs shorter rod as long as sensitivity and backbone are present?
Only thing that i can think of that will affect me using mono on a short rod is the shorter swing maybe lead to rolling to few more fish as the hook doesn't get lodged into their mouth.

I am sure that if i used it i could become comfortable with it like anything but really just looking for pro vs con of longer rod vs shorter... thanks guys

You can do one thing do a butt extension very easy to do. A longer butt makes it easier to swing fish especially on party boats. If you fish on charter boats or private boats that length of a rod is just fine. Most people who fish on those type of boats like a shorter Rod.

I agree with Doug. When I blackfish on party boats I prefer to use my 8ft and 7'6" rods. I still use an 8ft rod on charter boats but it is a little more of a nuisance when swinging fish therefore I usually just grab the line and pull em up. 6'6" to 7'6" is ideal for blackfishing private/charter boats but you may roll a few more fish and have a tougher time swinging them on the party boats.

Just my 2cents (I'm by no means a rod expert, just fish a LOT)

Butt extension is great idea! Even to give 6 inches longer on rod! And I fish a pretty good mix of private boats and party boats so something a little shorter may be good! Thanks guys
