I grew up on both the "Green" and the "Bound" brooks. We, as kids, would pull fish like crazy. The water was polluted and damn near condemned. Fish always held in the tire piles and log jams. Carp fishing, with the bow, was my favorite, but line fishing for carp, bass, catfish, sunny's and occasionally a trout (4 lb browns can be very hardy) was very cool. Green Brook starts @ Watchung Reservation, and Bound Brook starts in the Dismal Swamp. We've got stocked fish and naturals from both ends. We were picking crawfish from NewMarket Pond when I was 4 years old. Catfish, carp and bass as I grew. Finally stalking huge carp with the bow..... I've lived on the big "D" for the last 23 years, but I would know NOTHING without having lived on these creeks with my friends.

Yeah, Bound Brook gets torn up bad when the hurricanes hit.

Yes, the last I checked Torpedos is still open. It's still exactly the same. It occurred to me one night that they probably call it 'Torpedos' because it's sometimes underwater. http://www.sherv.net/cm/emoticons/mooning/mooning-girl.gif


There was talk of the government buying up some of that land because it is so flood-prone, but with demographics of the neighborhood in steep decline and the post-2008 real-estate slump, there are too many homeowners in the area that want to be bought out first.

Andy, Nice job on the visual evidence of what happens when people discard plastics and other disposables into the street or near a body of water. The politically correct worry about climate change bringing about an end of the world. I think their efforts would be better spent by controlling or curtailing what is more of a threat to the environment as evidenced by your picture(s). People complain about the change in the climate but won't bend over to pick up and dispose of a piece of paper or styrofoam or plastic. They think nothing of tossing a cigarette butt/ filter out of their car window. Nobody notices until it all collects in one spot, just like in your picture. Have you ever looked at the cigarette filters next to a highway divider when you are at a stop light? Where do they go? Do they evaporate? The so called environmentalists complain about how big businesses should shut down because they are causing climate change. These are the same people who complain about the over use of oil products yet drive on asphalt roads, fly off on vacations, turn the heat up in the winter yada, yada, yada. Can't they just look around and see what they are doing instead of complaining about others? How did that pollution get to where it is in your picture? Someone put it there one piece at a time. Clean water will do more to help improve the environment than any complaining about what might (or might not) happen in the distant future. If you fish, think about how others affect your happiness. Think about bringing a bag with you when you go fishing. If you see some flotsam, pick it up and recycle it properly. Think about picking it up before it gets to a sewer in your town and then to a waterway.
