Fishing the Hackensack

Hi all,

I just moved to Secaucus from Long Island and I was looking to do some striper fishing on the hackensack. Does anyone have any experience fishing in the area and can point me in the right direction?

I'm not sure about hackensack, but a lot of people fish for bass at crabhouse in edgewater, which is not too far from hackensack. good luck.

They are right in your backyard... Go to the ramp at Laurel Hill Park and look left and right... there are stripers both ways.. Personally I would start near the bridge.. use Rubber shads on a jig head... Look around, you'll find them.. If you don't have a boat it will be tougher, but a lot are still caught from shore.

Thx for the replies. I live over in the harmon cove townhouses so i'll try from the docks. Any good tackle and bait shops in the area?

The river is more dominated by white perch. I ran down from Laurel Hill ramp to Hudson Gen last Summer in August and marked NOTHING. Ive fished off docks in Hackensack by Rte 80 and got zero.

So I can not really name a hot spot. I did see a couple catch of 5 gallon bucket of white perch off Laurel Hill Ramp's floating dock.

from what my friends have told me, poke around with swim shads and you're get into some sooner or later, it can be pretty good up in that river.

Basically a seasonal thing in the Hackensack........Spring and Fall.
Shad, cranks and spinner baits. Best from a boat.
But I have caught them up to 20 lbs from the shore in some spots.
Know people that have eaten those caught in the fall and they are still with us, larger ones
are returning from the ocean to winter in the river. Wouldn't suggest
eating anything caught in the spring.
If you are going to keep any stay legal..CO's are around and watching.

summer is all perch and eels... Some good size bass are there in spring and fall, and many schoolies winter over as well... Guys start catching them in Feb some years... bob

Stopped today off Fish house road near Kearny for a few minutes, saw alot of fish breaking water but no takers. Threw shads, medal, poppers. Might try again in a few days.
