I've read countless reports on here about people being aggravated with catching blues in large quantities over stripers. Whats the point in getting angry over catching another species? I know it might not be as palatable or much of a trophy compared to stripers, but pound for pound blues are one of the best fighting fish out there. Enjoy the day fishing, especially if you're catching regardless of the species. I for one would kill to spend a day out on the water catching, no matter what species it is. Not everyone has the funds or ability to spend time out on the water. I can only get out a few times a year but enjoy every chance I get with friends and family enjoying a day out on the water even if it is catching blues over stripers. What I am trying to say is some of you are just being selfish. If you have the ability to spend 2,3 days a week out fishing, realize many would love to be in your position so don't complain if you are having a nice catch of blues, enjoy it!!!!!

I love to watch someone get their ass kicked, then complain about it!!!
Unfortunately, fish swim together and until I can become Mosses and separate the species, that's just the way it is.:D

So if JS216 had 2,876 posts like you his opinion would be more relevant, is that your point? Maybe he has better things to do with his time than post on NJF all day. If you disagree with his post say so but don't have to be a dick just because someone has only two posts. To get to 2,876 posts there was a time when you also only had 2, did that make your opinions less relevant?
JS216 as far as your post is concerned, certainly not everyone feels that way. I think the facts that blues have been so abundant over the years the mystique of catching them wears off. They are a valuable resource to many and you don't have to look back any further than last year when blues seemed to disappear for almost the entire season. Party boats were coming in railed with customers with not one fish caught, something unheard of with bluefish (other than when they're spawning and develop lock jaw). They fortunately made an appearance late in the season, maybe their migratory patterns changed but their lack of appearing in the beginning and half way through the season I'm sure concerned a lot of charter and party boat captains as well as recreational guys. Pound for pound they are a great fighting fish, if you clean them and ice them down they're actually not bad eating. I know a few guys who prepare them almost like a spread and you would never guess you were eating bluefish.....amazingly good! Snappers for kids right on up to the gators they are a very important resource to the economy in this area and for every person who has had their fill there's probably a dozen or so more who would love doing battle with them. I wouldn't necessarily call it selfishness, everyone has their preferences and some people just don't prefer blues.

I didn't want to come off as arrogant in posting this. Trust me, I understand where you guys are coming from with being aggravated. But, for me seeing it, someone who only has the opportunity to go out 2, maybe 3 or 4 times at most during the year, its aggravating to see people get upset with actually catching fish. Who knows, maybe if I was able to get out more often this opinion would change, but I think there would be others out there that are in the same boat as me (no pun intended) and agree with what I am saying.

I read nothing arrogant into your post. I happen to agree with you. While I'm fortunate enough to fish a bit more than you are, I'm happy to catch fish, I really don't care what's on the end of the line. I keep what I'll eat and the rest go back to swim again. Just because I'm targeting stripers doesn't mean I won't have fun pulling in sea robins.

Love the stripers but man, there is NOTHING more tedious then working a heavy croc all day and coming up empty. But hey, that's bassin'. Those days I would kill to have a few blues attacking my lure. I love when they're together and you get a real kick when you see it's a big striper on your hook.

I cant stand catching bluefish when I'm targeting something else. It genuinely pisses me off! Just trying to figure out how it makes me selfish?

Well said! They are one of the hardest fighting fish in the ocean pound for pound. As the saying goes do not yuck another mans yum. If the time allows you can come out for a day of fishing on me. Just send me a PM.

as you can see by my name not too difficult to guess what I mostly fish for. sure I love bass but If its action you want nothing compares on an everyday basis, not talking about the once every few years "bassacre" or tuna trip of the decade but if its action and knowing there is something on the end of the line nothing compares. I find it most comical when people travel hours and days to fish for fish that just don't compare but you get to say "i went to Timbuctu" and caught a (fill in whatever).

Some times i shake my head...if catching bluefish pisses you off go fish for sea bass oh wait you might catch a ling...hmmm maybe if you go try to catch blackfish you'll do better....ughhh i forgot the bergals might pek you clean....maybe if you just give up fishing that will be one less agervation in both our lifes:D and nobody will be pissed off ay all but then again you might get pissed off at not being able to have anything to get pissed off about!!! Just go fish have fun im no Rockefeller but its my choice to go throw 4odollar swimmers at the surf knowing there is a great chance a bluefish will tear it up. I have nobody to blame but myself the fish was just doing its natural thing and that's to eat

Offshore biscuit trip and ya don't mind pulling up double or triple dogs from 200-300 feet? I guess I'm just one selfish and angry individual....:D

People still think blue fish don't taste good? Poach it in water and cooking wine. It takes 5 minutes. Marinate it or season it before hand with garlic salt chili lemon worsteshire sauce whatever you like. Flake the dark meat off if you want and you can substitute the light flesh in place of crab to make cakes. People I know that won't eat striper beg me for the cakes I make out of bluefish. I just laugh when people complain about bluefish just wow.

Plenty of trips have been saved by the yellow eyed demons. I would much rather blues that the skunk any day.
I usually put a yearly trip together for the guys at work. The first year we fluked fished and everyone was boared. The blues mixed in and the fun beganm
since then its been tackle busting bluefushing teios year after year and the trips fill up quick.
Dont let bluefish disappoint you, they are a fun by catch.
On Tuesadys striper fish we couldnt buy a bass bite. The fish were there but you cant mak em eat. A few blues were caught..... at least we didnt get skunked.

One time, when I was at fish camp, I washed 300 pair of fish-slime covered jeans in 10 minutes, even pressed and folded.....beat that! (oh....had one pair with a 52" waist....I released it back to live another day)

Just keep the reports to fishing not a biography of ones life. If you want to post about ones daily life / drama then maybe consider a secondary site called

Only time I would curse bluefish was when I was standing on a jetty tip @ night in nasty weather and one happened to eat a bomber, darter or another plug with trebles that I was throwing. It get's a little dicey....other then that I was always glad to catch them.

But there's a certain ring to a big bass pulling drag continually.
Honestly, I'll gladly fight them if no bass are being caught, but I won't target them. Can I say I wouldn't be pissed off if I saved up for a bass charter and caught nothing but blues? I might get pissed..... but that's fishing.
