Out with the rest of the fleet today catching Sea Bass, when my pal Ron lifts this weird looking slender fish over the side. By the time we realize its not a fish but a large squid, the thing starts pumping ink like a garden hose all over us and the boat. Ron, thinking I'm pissed, because he just trashed my boat, swings it back in the water. My first reaction is to laugh my a** off stunned by what just happened and not knowing any better, I tell Ron, get it back in the boat. I had no idea these things could store so much ink, but here goes round 2. What he didnt ink the first time he got the second. Ron quickly dropped him in the bucket we were washing our hands in, where he was finally subdued. It measured 20" from tentacles to tail. Thought I'd seen everything.

I target them bluefishing at night when they show up around the boat. I use flashing squid jigs - key is to get them in quick and it a bucket of water where they unload their ink. One of the weirdest creatures to clean with the plastic-like cartilage spine and the parrot like beak! they cook up nice though! skin peels off and the guts come out pretty easy! I have jigs like this
