oct 13/2014 nj fishing exotic catch (http://www.jennyleesportfishing.com/blog/index.php?/archives/226-oct-132014-nj-fishing-exotic-catch.html)
http://www.jennyleesportfishing.com/blog/uploads/sword.jpghttp://www.jennyleesportfishing.com/blog/uploads/oct15.jpgcapt's kevin gerrity and dave bender took long time customer joe zagorski of wall, along with tim wittig of spotswood, steve hanstein of ringwood, dave esposito of hasbrouck heights, mike paci of lodi and dave valdivieso of nutley out on an over night canyon trip. this trip was a collaboration of several cancelled open boat trips and we have fished with them before. we postponed the day before due to the rough seas so off we went. it was a bumpy ride out in the southeast but we arrived on the spot about 2:30. we began to troll the weeds without a touch and a friend was already chunking, he called to say he had a few bites so we decided to anchor up and give it hell. we had our first bite within 20 minutes a 40 pound longfin and then two more shortly thereafter. things got very quiet after that and around 1am sven and i were the only two up had a runoff on the sword rod but it was just a quick run, as i expected the live squid was stripped, i told sven he never tasted the hook so he dropped down a tuna bomb into his zone.. game on after just a few minutes he showed himself, a 175 sword. he then got a good look at sven and dove down deep. sven and the two daves split time on this fish, and everytime we passed the rod the advantage goes to the fish, never mind the 50 pound leader versus the 300 pound on our sword specific rod. well after and hour we had a large sword on the deck. a few minutes later a tuna rod screams and mike does nice work of a 40 pound yellowfin. we then sat for hours hoping for the false light bite, at 8 am it was obvious that didn't happen. i was thinking of making some sort of move about 8:30 when we saw some marks on the screen, but couldn't buy a bite. all of a sudden a rod goes off and a white marlin jumps out of the water...off##%% we continue to see the marks when at 9am dave jigs a big fish, then seconds later so does kevin..the fish must have been close and unfortunately, dave's got cut off. kevin passes the rod to dave #2 and he is getting spooled on a shimano terez rod with a torsa 16 reel. we hurry to haul the anchor.. thank's to the hydraulic hauler it's done quickly.. dave screams up that he has about 5 wraps left on the spool, he walks up to the bow in sloppy conditions and we are chasing this fish down as he gets line back, after about fifteen minutes we are able to get the rod back to the cockpit and the guys each get a turn trying to gain line.. finally big steve get a lot of line back and mike gets his shot.. by now the way it's reacting i know it's a bigeye, seconds later i see the fish is laying up and capt kevin takes care of business... wow 175 pound slob on a very light setup.. what a way to end the trip. it was not a slammer but the sword fish and bigeye made it all the better
