View Full Version : Wind down, seas up...what gives?

I have Wednesday off and of course have my eye on the regular weather sites (Guru and NOAA).
Both show moderate winds but increasing seas (4 foot) for that day.
I am a fair weather fisherman and that wave height pushes my personal limit.
What causes this seeming contradiction of lessening winds but increasing seas?
Not sure what to target....fluke or bottom species.
What ocean conditions do you think Wednesday will bring and what would be the better bite?
I usally only get out once a month or so therefore I am seeking the opinion of the more frequent flyers.
Thanks for your thoughts.

Swells from distant storms don't need wind here to still be swells. Look at the period besides wave height. Long wave period at typically swells.

The direction of the wind also has a lot to do with it too.... Anything from the east, SE,NE or dead E will build the seas. West is best and even blowing at 20 knots it could still be fishable if you are tight into the beach.
NOAA forecasts for now are not that reliable since a lot of their data buoys that track wind speed, wave height and frequecy are down. Some are supposed to come back on line the end of this month and that should help... In the mean time they tend to err on the side of caution and the forecast are sometimes far worse then the actual conditions you will encouter.

15 seconds is a pretty long swell. I would go, but I have no brains and don't know enough to get scared.
Seriously it looks ok to me

Please look at winds that the most important if you are staying close there is no need to look and wave height and period. If the wind is from the north northeast or east pay particular attention to the tide. Try to fish the tide the has the wind going in the same direct. Don't attempt 10-15 out of the nne n or east at all. If it's slight out of that direction just watch ties direction. When I say close I mean with in a mile of the tip of sandy hook as I look for me to fish Wednesday it's very fish able right now. Not sure what size boat you are
