Today we had Tim and crew from PA for a trip. We opted to target bonito since the guys wanted to fill the freezer.
Ran off to where we had them yesterday, only to find a boat on the exact #'s I was at basically by myself most of the day yesterday (??) -- either way we set up and had quick action on bait and jigs. Fishing slowed though so we went up on the troll and doubled and tripled up the guys with nice 3-5# bonito. Every time we ran over a huge pile, we'd drift chum and bait/jig fish and we'd nail some nice fish -- only problem today was that the frigate mackerel inundated this area making it hard to get the baits to the bones.
Around 11 or so Ted hooked up to a screamer, the fish jumped and it was a beautiful gaffer sized mahi on his 8# test largemouth bass rod, and got it to the boat for Joe to stick it with the gaff. Fish was 12#. The guys wanted a lunch break, so we went back up on the troll and the first knockdown was a wild free jumping 16# mahi that Tim got to the boat for Joe to stick. Another beauty.
For a change of pace we went inshore to target fluke and seabass - that was NG but we did get 1 keeper fluke (4#) and 1 keeper seabass. We finished the day trolling locally for the bones and got a few more for the guys.
For the day we had ~50 bonito, the 2 nice gaffer sized mahi, and the 1 fluke and 1 seabass. Great trip with a great crew -- these guys got their wishes and got full sacks of meat to take back home!!!
