I recently did a charter up North
(wont mention the name of the boat as they do not advertise here)

We absolutely ANNIHILATED the Whiting & Ling

Since this is a Fishery that NJ Fisherman Glorified in the 70's and 80's I thought I would give you a glimse of the Fishery we have up North

Marc had a very good trip last week I only wish I was on that trip. I have to try to get in on one of his trips the fishing for the whiting up there is totally insane.

What state are you referring to when you say up north? Seeing pics of whiting brings a rush of memories.

Fish were caught from a NH Charter Boat LESS than an hour from the dock

Man do those pictures bring back memories! Younger people on this board have no idea how great the ling and whiting fishery was back in the 60's and the 70's. I only hope these fish continue to rebuild and migrate to the east as well. There's no reason if the commercial concerns are kept in check why this fishery can't be rebuilt. We should all learn from the fact that it not only collapsed like it did but did so seemingly over night. It's almost incomprehensible that a fishery that was so healthy could be decimated as quickly as it was but it shows what can happen to any stock of fish if it's over harvested commercially. Great eating fish and the bft love them to. If they ever rebound in the Mudhole again we'll see the big boys making their presence again during the fall migration. That was an amazing fishery as well, Hope we learn from our past mistakes.

Great to see those pictures, it reminds me of the Long Branch Pier back in the 70's!

Nice pics, but makes me sad that a NY/NJ fisherman must drive to NH to get whiting.. I have been encouraged by the fact that we are seeing a few being caught by the boats fishing for ling this summer.. Hopefully, in my lifetime[I am 60], we will see whiting/ling inshore in good numbers again, and have a vibrant winter fishery the way we did decade after decade, until the southern stocks of Whiting were obliterated. Lets hope they make a dramatic return the way stripers did... bob

Some of you know me
Most of you don't

I am from Queens NY and Fishing for Whiting in the 70 ' s and early 80 ' s was all I did all Winter long

We have had good Whiting fishing the last 5 years in NH but this year it is EXCEPTIONAL. It is actually an all year round fishery with the best fishing in the Summer Months

Here are a few more pictures

"yup" Lots of memories ... I rem when I was a kid like 8 years old my older brother (11) would take me out on party boats . We fished all year cuz thats what my Grandpa did . what I rem the most (besides havin frozen. hands) and my mouth tasted like bait from bitting gloves off to real in fish and re bait up . What I rem most was catching whiting 2-3 at a time . Filling small garbage pails full .. whiting was a good fish so ez to catch clean and cook

The Last Pictures Of An Amazing Trip

For those wondering if this is from a trip from 1975 it is not

It is from just a few days ago

We had so many Whiting and Ling our Captain called in a few other Captains to help clean fish

While Marc's charter loaded up on whiting, Leif and I took another trip offshore.

We had a cooler full of cod, pollack, haddock, cusk, and redfish. Marc's charters are great and I have always had a good trip. Ended up with 35lbs of fillets each.

Great food and nice people.

FISHARC 531-
I personally know how good this fishery can be. Back in the 40/50/60's I was a Winter-fishing regular on the Long Branch Fishing pier. It was then possible to manage catches like this, but I never remember any of us taking more than 2 or 3 dozen fish home to eat, freeze, or give to the neighbors. On calm nights with a NW wind you could make catches like this off the jetties, or even off the beaches.

Then the US government decided that the Northeast whiting/ling fishery was under-utilized. They tried to improve relations with the Russians by opening up the area to the big factory/processing ships. Well as you know, these ships came in and completely wiped out the fishery in a few years. It has yet to recover in the NY/NJ area over the last 40 years.

The huge pile of fish in your last picture looks like you guys overdid it a little for a fish that been trying to recover for the last 40 years. How many whiting/ling can you use at one time? I know it's none of my business, but I would like to respectfully suggest that you be a little more judicious in the quantity of fish you kill on a single trip.

With all due RESPECT

ALMOST all of my catch was donated to a local Food Bank

The daggers are averaging 2500 to 4000 pounds per tow

I do not believe our catch was in excess

I take what the law allows

When I go for Haddock I take 3

I abide by the laws

Most of them do not benefit the recreational fisherman

I appretiate your opinion but RESPECTFULLY disagree

Marc,

Next time you go release a few of those baseball bats and tell them, in a nice and encouraging manner, that the mud hole and NJ/NY misses them and that they'd be welcomed back down here with open mouths, ahem arms. :)

Nice job :D

I am doing another trip in a few weeks and I still have a bunch more pictures

Hope You Guys Enjoyed Seeing This

*** thanks For Posting the Charity Event I Did A Few Posts above ****

Here are some of the ling pictures which the locals think are GARBAGE and a few more Whiting Pictures. Actually they think Whiting are no better than Mackerel and are just bait fish for Tuna. I will show them otherwise.
