Going out deep for ling tomorrow on a friends boat and was thinking a bring a bigger rod for live lining a ling at shot of one of the many threshers around. I have a rod that is big enough a reel that will work with drag up to 30 pounds (will really have to work fish) have wire leader with 12/0 hook set up. so the question is should i use a weight to keep bait at certain level in water? should i use a ballon? i have never targeted thresher before so any advice would be great

Make sure you get the required license.

Do you have all the necessary tools to land one safely and securely? Fly gaffs? Harpoon? Tail rope? The end game with even a small thresher can get hairy if you're not alert and prepared.

Depending on the current, you can add lead accordingly to the set up to get your bait down. Once down at the desired depth, you can add a balloon (or shark float) to get the line out away from the boat.

I'd be using bunker, a cocktail blue, or a bluefish fillet as bait... but that's just me :D

Go to the main menu here and under Articles you will see one on shark fishing.

You usually drfit, not anchor and use weighed lines and ballons in your chum slick put out at diffrent depths. If you are bottom fishing, only have one pole and are anchored, I think you'd be better setting it up as a pitch pole and throw your bait at him if you happen to see one around the boat.

no matter what, best of luck Randy! hows the turkey in the oven going? whens it due? you find out if its a fisherboy or fishergirl yet? best of luck and congrats again!

a whole live bunk,or the smaller model bluefish is your best bet for sure, just mind that tail with your head, dont let it get in the way, bring a shotgun and blast its face off!

All great stuff coming so far guys. We are going many for ling to fill the freezers but with all the threshers around we are gonna have a set up ready and chum pot off the back of the boat. not sure if we are gonna drift yet or anchor prob depend on drift and current conditions. we have shark fished before and landed a few makos safely we have all equipment needed to do this without harm to us.
With the recent NE breeze i was figuring we might need weights but i guess we will see.
Adam the wife is good she is 34 weeks tomorrow, due on 9/4/14! as for boy or girl that will be a surprise. the only thing that isn't a surprise is wither sex santa is bring a fishing rod..
please keep the advice coming guys all good stuff tight lines to all!!!

the only three i have got were on the bottom and the baits were smaller then i would normally use i did speak to a few guys that caught them this year and they were caught all up and down the water collume if i was only fishing one rod i would place it were the bait is unless you do use chum then i would keep it at 50'

Good time fishing next to you Randy, too bad the thresher thing didn't work out. Wife says thanks as well for the csf leak advice.
