View Full Version : RI Fluke Trip
Received call from Capt. friend in RI that the he was into big fish bite. Got crew together on short notice for 2 day trip this past Mon and Tues. Crew consisted (CSI Mike, Cuz, Uncle Paulie and myself) Mike's son works for the coast guard up there so it was a chance for him to fish and see his son which is one of the reasons I called him. Enjoy fishing with guys like him as he is a high character guy who is a great family man, works hard and has a passion for fishing) All things I cherish.
We were fishing 8 minutes from the dock in 150 ft of water 100 yards from land. We all bucktailed hard and were rewarded with limits both days. Limit is 8 fish a man at 18" up in RI. Needless to say my family and neighbors were extremely happy with the fluke I gave them. This is one of my favorite places to fish as the scenery is breathtaking. Fished my new Diawa Lexa 300 PWR 5.1 gear ratio that I picked up from sponsor JIGGING WORLD w/ Power handle that matches up perfectly with Diawa Interline rod with no guides I picked up this winter specifically for bucktailing fluke. The entire set up weighs in at 18.3 oz. Could not be happier with this set up as a lot of fluke will be seeing the bottom of my cooler this year. Wish I had taken more pictures but was to busy catching fish. Hopefully other guys took pictures and can post.

Nice trip Alex Im headed up there on Thursday I can't wait a family trip is planned. Next month I'm going to be doing another trip. There may be a better mix of Sea Bass & Porgies in the mix as well. Those of you who fished with me on those trips get in touch with me. Otherwise I will post a date looking to fill in any voids.

We fished both inside and ocean side
Better fishing and bigger fish were inside. We predominately fished
90 to 120 ft. Did some deeper drift starting in 160. Water was deeper inside than outside area we fished. Fished 4-5 oz most of the time and switched to 6-8 oz just for a short time on day 1 when drift and wind picked up. I would bring bucktails in 3-8 oz range. Would also bring some heavy sinkers in 5-10 oz range if you are going to drag bait. I dead sticked giant 16-18 inch whole squid on double hook rig for the last 30 min as I was looking for a giant and had 3 nice fish to end day while I bucktailed another few in between hits. Not supper sticky as I only lost one Bucktail in 2 days as bottom is much more forgiving then by us

As for the interline rod I picked it up over the winter at flea market in LI
I think most guys use them to surf fish as they come in various sizes. I believe they do not make them any more. When I picked it up I like the w height to power ratio and the nice bend. Knew it would make a great Bucktail rod for my style of fishing. Also used it this winter for blackfishing and thought it would make a killer blackfish rod but did not like it as the feel of the bite was totally different as the the rod did not transmit the bite properly to me
Do a search on Daiwa Interline rods I think it was more a a novelty and something different that really never caught on. I am not a surf guy but that seems where the following is on these rods. I like to think out of the box and it seems to work for me as a Bucktail and jigging rod. Being it is different it makes a great conversation piece on the boat just like spiral wraps rods do.
