Fished today with my son Brian, and Jeff and his son Andrew on Grateful Dad out of Keyport. With a good forecast and high hopes for making it out to Sandy Hook Reef we were greeted with whitecaps throughout Raritan bay and a strong East wind. That limited our game plan, forcing us to stay in the Triangle. We fished hard but only had 3 or 4 shorts to show for our efforts, then we got some intel that there was some life to the West toward S.Amboy (big thank you to Duffman who was also fishing with his son, and managed to put 2 nice ones on ice). Here Brian got our only keeper of the day.
I knew today was gonna be memorable because it started off at Brown's Marina with something I'd like to forget - when loading the boat I took a step backwards on the finger dock and wound up in the water :o I nearly saved myself but my substantial momentum could not be stopped. That was a first, and hopefully my last !

Been there, done that. Fell in the water at 5 AM at Gateway Marina once when loading my boat for a weakfish tournament. Ended up winning the tournament but got a speeding ticket on the way home.

For the past three years the back seems like it has one good shot of fish early and then it craps out. I use to fish from buoy 19 to the triangle all summer with great results until Sandy came along, something changed. Thats why i moved my boat to the highlands. Rather put the miles on my truck than my boat.

Same here! I ended up in the bay myself. Forecast did not call for what we had!
It sucked. Gonna try again tomorrow, hopefully can get to the reef.

Wtf was up with that wind? As we drifted and listened to the marine forecast it was saying 5-10 SW while it was honking out of the NE!!!
Glad you picked at least one keeper. Must of sucked fishing wet all day..:D
Interesting find in one of the keepers stomach..

The conditions definitely were not what we expected. 5-10 my ass.
Made the best of a crappy day with a father and son trip. The back of the bay didn't just crap out, it never got started.
I did manage to get a shot of Larry just before his epic tumble off the dock. Training for the Rio Olympics 2016....

I disagree. I've been fishing a NS boat of Keyport every weekend and my son also happens to be a mate on the boat. For the past 3 weeks they've been fishing the north and east end of the bay and with very few exceptions have caught at least 5 fish over #5 daily. It usually takes a #6+ to win the pool. Last weekend there were 3 #7's boated (including mine at #7.2) as well as 2 more 7s during the week. No really giants have been boated with the 2 biggest going #8.4.
