My second trip to Raritan bay was better than the first but still had some disappointment. After receiving some good reports about blues from members of this board (which I thank) we decided to head from Virginia to the bay on Tuesday. The forecast said thunderstorms so changed plans to go on Wednesday morning and fish till Saturday. Buddy Bill made the trip on Tuesday and reported many blues caught on top and metal ….some on the fly…..I’m ticked I listened to the weather report and didn’t come up Tuesday. So I leave the house at 3 AM, pickup buddy Sander at 5 and arrive at Keyport by 9. Launch at high tide and head to around Point to Union beach area. Caught fish after fish until tide changed around 3PM. Then nothing….dead….fish for few more hours and didn’t get a tap. Water looked a little dirty so we came in.
Had a great meal at some Oriental food place next to the Best Western in Hazlet. Hit the sack anticipating catching many fish in the morning. Launched at 9 AM and headed to same spot. Weather changed wind from NE to East….NOOOOOOOO Fish……went all over the bay….didn’t get on tap. Decided to load boat at dead low tide in Keyport…..challenge with at 22 foot Grady Seafarer in a stiff breeze…. But manager to get her on the trailer. Packed up and checked out for home. Five hrs. later I’m in the driveway thinking about coming up again. Got to use the fly rods. Water temp was 63. Too cold I’m going to wait till is 68 water and 80 degree weather.
Thanks for all your help…..let me know if the are in the Keyport bay around the sail boats.....Love the fly action

Next time try the Shrewsbury river and launch out of Atlantic Highlands. Last weekend there were all the Bluefish you could stand right outside of Bahr's restaurant (good place to eat too). Had rainfish balled up and birds working from overhead. Fish were crushing a topwater chug plug from the 3# easy to handle size to the estimated 15# purple gorilla "handful".

BTW....that's a hell of a drive for Blues!
