Stripers in the ocean -topwater plugs

I know most people are getting them on live bunker but wondering if anyone is getting them on topwater plugs. Would be a sweet way to catch and release them.

Killed them Sunday on the Bunker. If u want to maybee deadstik a bunker and toss this is what I use. Pushing 10 inches.

Probably one of the most exciting ways to catch Stripers. Nothing like the thrill of seeing a fish come up and swipe at something you're connected to :eek:

IMHO you want a popper which means something that you work to make water pop water out in front of the lure so it makes some surface comotion.. They are especially deadly on calmer days.

Most poppers have a concave faces like you see below which when reeled in creates the pop splash out in front of the lure.

Cast them out most are floaters so they stay on top, reel in slack and twitch your pole tip to make them pop, reel in slack and repeat.

Not sure of the brand but many companies making them, Bomber and Stingo to name a few. If you go into any of our sponsor tackle stores they will hook you up.

2 things to make sure of..... You want to be sure it floats and is fairly heavy so you can cast it a pretty good distance. You buy something light and it will not cast as far....

Also, I like using spining instead of coventional reels for this sort of fishing since spining reels tend to cast lighter objects further and no backlashes. I also think they are easier to work in the motion you need to have to make these lures pop. It's basically keeping your tip high and sweeping from 12 to 9 position. Best way I can decribe is just like you are snagging bunker but with your rod tip up and not as aggressive of a sweep from 12-9.

Take a few close casts so you can watch the action of the lure to get your motion dialed in... You want the water to pop out in front of the lure.

Super Strike makes some awesome plugs. I was using darters the other day and getting bluefish to follow and bump them. A chartreuse green one got the most attention and another one that looks like a bunker got a few followers. The darters can be worked in a number of ways. Zig-zagged with short quick pulls or just a steady retrieve will look like a bunker swimming. Bottle neck and popper plugs work well too. Love top water more than anything else!

The bigger the plug the better. Gibbs makes great plugs, tsunami actually has a nice 10" popper that's not bad for the price. So does braid. Not bad for starters. Its all about how you work em. Spinning gear is really the best way to make em move.

I like using big pencil poppers better than the concave faced ones..
They give a much better side to side action
