Boat Sinking in Keyport

My buddy posted this picture on facebook from this morning of a boat sinking in its slip in keyport.

Wow, that really does suck.... don't know the boat but I can tell you that it is the inside slip at Pedersons fuel dock.

that sucks I got that call back in 98 that my boat was sinking in its slip there in keyport great bunch of guys kept it afloat til my buddy could get there with the trailer to get it out a half dollar rot hole through the gimbal housing almost sank her that time.:eek:

talk about bad luck guy just put the boat in last weekend and the pole at his slip broke moved to the gas dock and got stuck under it and filled with water believe he said it was a 29 everglades just installed all new electronics.

Lost one of my boats in Keyport as we'll and just invested 25k for 2 brand new engines a month before. Only smart thing I did was uped the insurance when I bought the engines so a somewhat happy ending for me. I hope he has good insurance.

Btw there are 2 ways to insure your boat....Agreed to value and blue book value which is just like how cars do it. I've always thought the Agreed to value was better route, especially if you have made improvements to the boat. You assign a value you want to be insured for a pay your premium based on that. I never would have got the money I had spent on those new engines on a blue book value policy.

sounds like the marina should be covering this one if it was their piling that caused the issue.

From what I understand is that the boat was put in a temp slip (the one next to the fuel dock) due to the fact that the slip he is assigned had a damaged piling. Not sure how the bow could have gone under the dock as stated above, that is a floating dock.

I can assure you that Hans Pedersen and Sons is a first class operation, stand up people, and will help this guy out however they can.

Looks like it's on a finger peer and probably only tied up on one side. Wonder if that might have something to do with it. Maybe the stern quarter got caught under the peer or something and it flooded through the scupper??

Had mine tied that way and it wound up under the finger peer. I spoke to someone down that way earlier in the day at Browns and he said they were a few hours from low and they already had water in the parking lot where the resturant used to be by the bridge.

wow what a shame, it hurts to look at that picture.........gorgeous boat and very well setup by the sounds of it, thats gotta hurt bad, insurance or not, what a heartache. Hopefully it works out for the guy and the marina, maybe they can get her out and fired up before the thing ends up totalled

I know I speak for many when i say that we love our boats very much, taking care of them and even obsessing over them, I can't imagine the feeling even with insurance.

To the owner, if your boat is out of commission and you want to fish, PM me, I'd be happy to take you out.

Finger pier no issue, if boat fendered off ! Tied my. 33' footer to float dock for years only tieing from one side . Several fenders kept her off dock under any conditions. Mute point now I can only guess how owner feels , sad indeed !!

From what I understand this is what happened.

The boat was tied to the finger pier, with the blow we had the other day there was a lot of rocking and rolling going on and the stern line on the boat wore thru which caused the boat to sit in the slip sideways. As the tide came in, the stern/motors were laying up along the bulkhead side of the slip and the motor got caught on the bulkhead which caused the stern to take on water.

Could it have been avoided by heavier dock lines????? Possibly. Was it anyones fault...... not from what I heard. Still a damn shame. Motor has been pickled and time will only tell the extent of the damage...... I'm sure the electrical components will have to be replaced.

I am a friend to the owner of the boat. I have no clue how it happened, but can only speculate that it was tied to tight for the water level rising.
He has gotten it out since then, but I can only imagine what damage has been done to the electronics and motors. I have no been down to check it out, but will keep you all posted if you are interested on the out come.

Yep guys it my boat. The runoff from the creek and the moon and the outgoing tide was too much for the cleats. 5/8 braided dock lines didn't break. I had quite a few on the boat. What did give were the bolts on the dock. One word of advise for everyone. Please check your insurance policy. Make sure your covered all year round not just Memorial Day to Labor Day. I'm up s**** creek with this one. Worst thing is I just put 2 new foruno displays, autopilot, VHS and fish finder. 20k total. It was in the water for autopilot tuning. And a lil striper fishing Big mistake!!! I did have 2 stripers. I hope I have enough meat to hold me over till the boat gets fixed. I thank everybody for there concerns and offers. Which I might take up on to get my mind off the boat.

P.s. Does anybody know a good electronics guy or any good deals going on. Also a Yamaha mechanic and a fiberglass guy. Also any taco grand slam outriggers for sale. I was hurting already with the new electronics but it a lot worst now.

Sorry to read your post, I can't even imagine what you must be feeling. Good point about insurance coverage, I'm sure everyone who reads this will be checking their policies. It amazes me how often and not just with boat policies we think we have coverage but for some innocuous reason we find out we don't the hard way. On that note, if it was failure of the cleats or a bolt on the dock, why can't you file a claim against the marina's policy? I would think their coverage would come into play here since it's their equipment which malfunctioned and led to the accident.

I'm sure you've already addressed this but I'm curious why that wouldn't be the case.

Can someone explain how the marina's comprehensive liability insurance wouldn't be responsible for this accident since it appears the cleat malfunctioned. If there was any negligence by the boat owner, wrong slip, didn't tie lines properly, used lines which were too light etc. I can see where the owner is negligent and ultimately responsible. Am I to understand that a marina's cleat malfunctions causing a boat to sink and the marina isn't first off responsible for that damage and second that they should have insurance coverage for this type of situation. If they don't, I would think the marina is still ultimately at fault and responsible for full restitution.

What am I missing?

That's 1 bad day for the poor guy who owns that boat. Don't know the cause but a lot of boats sink when the pump fails or battery dies. Couple things that could help. Put a battery charger on the boat. If you do install a timer so if the charger fails you won't cook out the battery. Also install a 2nd pump 4 or 5" higher then the original. It's a good idea to discharge to the other side of the boat then your 1st pump. This will let you know if the 1st 1 fails.
