Stepped out of my comfort zone for a change and launched in a spot I had never kayaked before yesterday. Was on the water by 4:30 and hooked up within 5 minutes. Ended up landing 3 Pike; 2 average sized males and 1 fat female. All came on a brightly colored jerk bait. Felt nice to get some slime on the kayak after a long ass winter!

Nice! Been reading a lot this winter, trying to cross my ever first pike off the catch list this year. Guess its time to start putting that reading and map searching to use. No boat yet so stuck on the shore of Passaic for me.

NICE pike ! Don't feel like the Passaic is the only place to get pike, Spruce Run off the shoreline in April can be great.
You got the Millstone and Pompton rivers also.
Budd Lake, Cranberry Lake, Farrington Lake, and Pompton Lake just to name a few also.

Niiiice Rob. Good stuff. After the rain and water settles I might have to make a trip up to where I normally fish on PR. Good to see theyre responding... I dunno if its the pic but that fish looks huge! Great color too.

Nice fish Rob! Anyone know why they don't stock them in monksville? It seems like that north side would be good habitat from why I understand of pike.

Great fish Skunk. I didn't realize you could sex pike.

It's still too cold for me to get out on the water. I'll probably hold out until we get a daytime high of at least the 60's.

Be careful out there. Hypothermia sets in very quickly when someone falls into this ice-cold water.

This time of year is fairly easy. The females are always very fat and oftentimes, longer than the males. After the spawning period, your guess is as good as mine lol.

There is a picture floating around of a guy holding a low 30" Pike near the standing timber at Monksville from the early/mid 90's.

I did a Google and search and found that there are slight differences in the urogenital areas of male and female pike. I guess you can differentiate the sexes throughout the year if you want to study the pike's junk with a magnifying glass.

Andy I love your enthusiasm about the millstone river pike but being that it's my home town river and spend a lot of time looking for that millstone pike, I'm starting to think it's a myth lol

Pike are considered a nuisance fish in many states and countries. They can over-populate a lake and decimate native gamefish pops. There are cases of state agenices having to poison lakes to get rid of them. They gotta be careful where they stock them. Natural reproduction in NJ is rare so thats the only reason they aren't a problem fish...yet.
