Sure hope the NE council prevails on this one. Our waters are infested with those rats of the sea and they are competing with and eating our more desired species.

In my eyes the only limit on those bastiches is how many you throw back in the water that are still alive: catch,kill,release...

We do have a big issue with them in our waters... You hook one and there's another 3 following it up.... Same thing with Stripers this past fall... You'd reel one in and there would be doggies following it up.

Find the biggest commercial boat and the limit would be 1
Dogfish less then it takes to sink the boat! And do it every day !

My 2 cents

they are becoming table fare, so why not start harvesting them more commercially! while i don't actually practice "helping them to get to the bottom faster", I do bust out the spines so they don't have a chance to spike me or anyone else! the smooth dogfish do just fine with no spines! ;)

A sharp but not overly hard rap on the noggin and the released ones will be chasing their tales literally .

Works every time. :)

If you take off the spikes right away, they are pretty good eating. Almost like catfish meat.

I must disagree with our friends here.. These fish are just trying to survive is all..
They aren't the reason most of the groundfish are gone.. We are... people..
I recall many late fall/winter/early spring party boat trips years ago, when NO horn dogs were caught at all.. Some trips, maybe 2 or 3 came up all day.. There were too many other fish out there in those days, and dogs were just a small part of the mix... We started seeing these massive catches of horn dogs when the Cod, Pollock, Whiting,Ling,Tog stocks fell off the cliff.

We [people] took and ate a lot of what they eat..

Horn dog populations have collapsed in Europe, because they are widely eaten there.. Perhaps they will become the "next big thing" in Asian markets, restaurants, sushi places etc here in the states.. When horn dogs fetch $5 a pound whole, end of problem,, The commercials would have them down to nothing in a year. If the feds allow it of course... bob

I don't understand why they are so popular in England/Europe and here very few people eat them. On Tuna Wahoo if the customers want them, we fillet them as soon as they come on board. Take them home, bread the chunks and fry em up! If everybody started eating them, end of oversupply and then the feds would have something else to over regulate us on :)
