See a lot of forums like ours now pushing ads right in line of peoples posts. Someone starts a post, someone replies, next what looks like a reply but it's an ad. Opinions on this??

when I see all of those ads in between the posts, I generally don't go to those sites anymore.
Seems like my computer days are getting fewer and farther between Greg. Hope you don't ruin the site, because I still like this one :)

You mean like meet Christian singles now or Japanese therapy or this lawyer can help with my taxes... Etc... Palease!! Don't go there, from being I fishing site junkee and never not going from spot to spot, day to day, I see the migration coming to here due the lack of bs in many sorts not just adds alone, politics, personal vendettas, and such... Many more, but this site is the best for many reasons- and no add bs is definitely one of those that makes this site smooth and comfortable, per say, ya know what I mean.
Just say no!!

They are extremely annoying. Just because you wave something in front of my face doesn't make me want to click on it. I think most advertising now a days is insulting to people's intelligence, treating us like big dummys and these pop up ads are the worst kind. They are a huge distraction from what people actually come to these sites for.

You mean to tell me that there's other fishing websites out there? Say it ain't so Gerry...say it ain't so! :D

If I wanted to see a lot of adds I would just unlock pop ups. I can't say that I know anyone that's doesn't block pop ups. It's the same thing. Except we can't block them

Distracting maybe, offensive no. You can't run the site for free.

i tend to avoid those sites because those ads fish your information and then load your inbox or spam box with garbage emails. plus, it makes following a post really annoying!

No Ads. Didn't a lot of our new members jump ship from that other site because they started placing ads on the site? We don't need or want that to happen here..This is the best site around, let's keep it that way.

Did Vertical Scope come a knocking Gerry?
I'd rather pay a small yearly fee to able to read and post on this forum then be bombarded with spam and ads galore. And as stated above these ad's are just so damn insulting to your intelligence.

I hate the sites sticking those ads in like a post .... turned me off from going to them anymore... and if I do want to read something I skip right over the ad and don't even look at them.... you can't win... advertising is a necessary evil but a big nuisance to the viewer!!

You already have a pretty big advertising banner at the top of the page. If there were ads between the posts, it would be more filler than content. That said, I think we all adjust. It's a bit of an inconvenience in the beginning, but I don't see people packing up their campers and moving on. You've got a pretty loyal crew here, Gerry!

Let me chime in on this --I left the other site for that very reason..I pay a site to advertise and sponsor..Then while posting a product or sale , i see cabelas ads posted in between my ad as a paid sponsor.
The readership has declined on the other site and mostly now it's the usual daily posters/bitchers
If this site goes that way it is over as well and i will leave this one too.
But they are all going to the vertical scope method as they gain memebers
Hope Jerry holds out as long as he can..I realize when some company throws big money at you its hard though.

I do read the ads for our sponsors and whenever possible I patronize their business because they are site sponsors. The site does not run for free and the ad space at the top of the boards is where the ads should be.

Please don't do it unless you are planning to sell like that other site.

Don't do it unless the site was costing you money and you need to do it to keep the site going.

OK - Pretty clear where you all stand with the inline ads... I'm of the same opinion but thought I'd check in with you all too.
In my opinion they really do clutter up a post and like Tony mentioned, I think it is offensive to paying sponsors... You take the time to put up a fishing report or post and there are advertisements, maybe even from your competitors right in your post. I thought that was over the top.
PS - Going to send Wilson an invoice for his annual ad free NJFishing.com subscription.... Thanks for the suggestion Wilson :D

I should get a subscription gratis for the idea.
I pay $80.00 a month for cable TV and probably spend more time reading NJF then watching TV:eek:
And Duffman I'm not cheap, just not a gambler. I'd rather piss my money away in a bar...not in some half ass'ed pool or contest or fantasy thing.

Gerry bottom line if it makes you more money go for it. I appreciate the fact that the site is free and all these people that are b****ing and moaning about this decision is kidding themselves because they don't have to worry about running this site or supporting their families on it when you own a business you do what you have to do to make your living. If they were in your shoes I wonder what there thoughts would be
My rant is now over

Gerry,
Just the fact that you asked our opinion speaks volumes towards your character.
In todays world where everyone is out for themselves I really appreciate that our opinion would matter.
With that being said...Do I like the adds that look like posts? Hate them....
Would I think less of you or your site if you opted for them? Never...
You put a decade into making this site what it is (remember the old board?)and if you feel that now is the time in your life that you want, or need, to go that route that is your decision. This is you ship and we are all just along for the ride....
Now if I were a paying sponsor it might be different story.

Free ?? Really ?? I (and all of the other sponsors) just got a bill for your free site ! I don't mind it, it's the cost of doing business, but some of the comments here indicate that the members do not remember that the sponsors pay for this site. Gerry has indicated that he realizes bringing in a major advertising company would negatively impact his bottom line with the local sponsors, but I think some of our readers don't realize this site costs the sponsors big bucks. End of my rant !

Rich - You are correct that it's the sponsors like you that keep this site afloat. I would however say that most of our readers are well aware of this and are very loyal, supportive and protective of our sponsors for this very reason.
First of all the site has to be free to attract and retain visitors. Free is what people's expectations are and if you don't meet expectations there are not going to be any people coming to the site to see ads. However it's not really free because someone has to pay to support the free visitors. For me as a site owner I have a few choices to make.
1) Have specific and dedicated local sponsors support the site with their advertising dollars
2) Team up with and ad serving company like Google Ad Sense and push in-discriminant ads on visitors.
You will notice I do both. I do have a limited amount of ads on the site that are not local sponsors but I chose not to get too aggressive with them and put them in line of posts. I decided to go this route for 2 reasons.
1) I want to be respectful and give preference to our local sponsors who support the site with their advertising dollars since that is where the majority of the revenues are coming from.
2) I think the in line ads in posts are distracting to our readers and since many are not related to anything having to do with fishing, that makes them evenmore distracting.

The site gets the Sponsors advertising fee
Not sure what you mean by this Fred....
A lot of sites out there have paid sponsorships from local businesses like you and they also push ads in line on posts and potentially your posts as well.
How do you feel about that from a sponsors perspective?
Well rich the site is free for me and the majority of guys on here. I would like to keep it that way. If that means ads then so be it.
and you pay a fee for the site. What $500 to $1000 maybe a bit more. How much business do you get from the site. Any site sponsor can't complain this site can do wonders for a business. The site sponsors make more money off being here than gerry does from your advertising fee.
As someone said gerry the fact that you even asked says wonders about your character. But this your business and you gotta do what you gotta do. I for one will continue to frequent the site either way.

I just started advertising on a motorcycle forum. I am doing a 3 month trial. They have the ad's within the post and it is so annoying. When I first started navigating through the threads I thought there was something wrong with the site, it's absolutely terrible. Every time I am trying to read through a thread another ad pops up. As a sponsor, I am very happy with this site the way that it is but would support any changes you would want to make Gerry! :)

Great feedback everyone..... Thankfully we have enough sponsors on this site so we don't have to go that route.
The only reason I even put this post up was to confirm what I was thinking, which was those inline ads were annoying.
