This is bad for he small time commercial guy n even the recreational fisherman. This is all about GREED n one large southern based bait company wanting control of this Market in NJ , They have been sending trawlers out since the begining of the year south bound just to make sure that quota was filled early.
Hell this company even has a person on the counsel just to make sure things go their way . Politics once again. If this was the was the S E C for insider trading in this industry their would plenty of investigations going on and indictments handed down !
Regulations are needed yes but one company having control of it is not
Hold on to your hats wait till you see the price of bucket of chum this year , a dozen crabs, or a lobster .
See Ya

Jim, I'll see if I can get that on the record. Thanks

There was great concern about a recent letter from the DEP stating that the menhaden quota had been filled and the season was closed and would not reopen until 2015. However, this is for specific gear types and also a by-catch of less than 6000 lbs. is still permitted. Most, if not all of our bait boats that use this type of gear harvest less than that so this closure should have no effect on our fishermen or bait and tackle stores

Usually a by catch limit gets based by a percentage example 10 percent of what other species are landed on board a vessel . Trust me this is gonna hurt the little guy. When the purse seine season opens up it will most likely be done by mid July . Less quota , less available on market means bait price up. Price by availability . If you believe other wise your kidding yourself or the business will go out of state and get shipped in. I saw it first hand at the end if the season lays year

From what I understand the purse sieners are not restricted to 6000lbs a day all other types of gear are.I will post more when I get more info.Waiting on a phone call and hope to have more accurate info.
Capt. Sal,
The way I understood it was the 6,000 lbs was the permitted by-catch allowed to the closed categories (gill net, pound net, bait net, otter trawl).
Let me know what you find out.

The correct amount for the Purse Seine boats is 39,641,600 pounds which is 95% of the total of the states allocation.
