Here`s a thought that would require some work to organize, but it might be worth it. The idea is the result of a post by Joey Da Fish, which I could not agree with more.
Let`s pick a date to revolt against the injustices against us as individual fisherman. We can inform the powers that be that on a given day we as anglers plan on keeping 1 fish that`s as close to 18 inches as possible, but just short.
By putting our money where our mouths are in the form of paying a fine for that one fish we can overload the system and make our point. I am sure we can get the news media involved to some degree to help make this point.
If you were to pick a central point or points where boats would come into port and let it be known, the boat traffic and the inability for the Fish and Game to handle it would be priceless.
I am a man of meager means, but I am willing to put my money where my mouth is and try to make a point and shed some light on a screwed up system. Not to mention taking away the ability of guys right here on this site, too RAT on fellow fisherman that are concerned about conservation and their right to fish! Post by Joey da Fish It has nothing to do with being an honest person. You do have some valid points. It would be one thing to follow just regulations. But to allow unjust regulations tainted by a big money lobbyist by a corrupt self serving government does not make me or anyone else dishonest. We as a country seceded from England for this very reason!!! This is how our country was founded. By the people for the people. Not by the government for the government. It's about money. That my friends is dishonest and reprehensible!!! To cater or pander to this is un American I stand with the people not this government. Nough said flush hard my friends. I'm mostly a catch and release guy so you won't have to worry about me. But to other that love to fish I say make your own rules because you have more to lose then anyone else on this matter. Last but not least **** the US government they are all corrupt, bought and sold pieces of human garbage. Can you hear me now

Before You go there be warned that in NJ if you get 2 fish and game violations with in a 5 year period your hunting and fishing licenses will be suspended for 2 years. They need to be seperate incidents so if You get 2 at one time it counts as one.If You ONLY salt water fish go for it. I hunt and freshwater fish as well, and as much as I din't like what is going on, I am not putting My hunting license on the line.
Breaking the law is not going to change anything anyway.Guys can beat there chests on here all day long, but when it comes down to being the first one to ask for a ticket,I'll believe it when I see it.
If this is the best answer We can come up with We are doomed!

Bowhunter, I am NOT to looking to get into an argument or disrespect you in any way, you expressed how other individuals and yourself might be affected if they were given multiple summonses from fish and game. Great. Thanks!
Constructively how would you bring attention to the problem and how much time are you willing to donate to a cause that you enjoy. It`s easy to sit back and comment, but will you walk the talk like I will or leave it at that and just make negative remarks.

Not trying to rain on your parade or steal your thunder. I once was as full of piss and vinegar, fired up as all hell.
Eventually, while your cause is noble, you'll come to realize you will stand alone or damn near it. Back five years or so ago the regs shut us down two days before the Labor Day weekend. Well, did that cause quite an uproar. Everybody was spewing venom and ready to eat a mile of their shyte and then go out and do battle with the regulators. A protest was called for. The Atlantic Highlands harbor was supposed to be choked with private boaters and the party fleet to an extent were on board. As the protest day got closer the steam rapidly dissipated. Till, eventually, there wasn't even a rally let alone an on the water protest. It is one thing to talk tough, yet another to be tough. I don't know you, so I'd never question your bravery. Moreover, I would love to see just what would happen if this ever were held. Respectfully, I'll stay out of this one. I'm with Frugal, I'll protest and try not to get caught.
I have contributed money to several causes. Mind you, I'm far from wealthy. I attended meetings, far and near from my home on my dime and time. I wrote letter after letter, till my fingers bled. Yeah, I even agreed to participate in the Great Labor Day Uprising. All the while I believed that doing all these things would eventually make a difference. I'm saddened to report, in the end, it all went to shyte and flew out the window with the latest set of regs.
Hell, I'll help you get it together, if you need help. But, I'm going into stealth mode. I'll get my fish, without raping the resource. Sometimes a man's got to do what a man's got to do.
I wish you well. I just hope when you walk off the boat the day of your protest that you have others, make that many others with you. Most importantly make sure you don't get off the boat with only your (stick) in your hand.
GOOD LUCK!!

I greatly appreciate your response and recognize that it would be a beast of an endeavor. It would require the help of a lot of people, including someone to organize the Party boat and Charter boat contingents, Bait and tackle shops to post the effort and so on. It certainly would not be easy. but what`s the alternative.
At the end of the day, I am just one guy that`s very frustrated. I do not have all of the answers, but I would put in the time and effort. Big things start small, either it snowballs or dies here. All we need is the right people to step up and commit.

Bowhunter, I am NOT upset with you at all. Far from it! Just wish that you had a positive option rather than just bringing more negativity to the table. Everybody is entitled to their opinion.
It`s funny because today everybody is so concerned about security, post terrorist attacks, but at the end of the day most people who are concerned would cry if their rights were infringed upon in order to provide a secure place. Same here, people cry and complain, but yet the thought of something that could affect them personally in a negative way stops them dead in their tracks.

Bowhunter I will break it down for you real simple. Basically people whine and complain that they want change, but not at the thought of any expense to them. Referring to what it`s all about, your not happy with the regs, but yet you will do nothing but complain and criticize rather than placing your ability to bow hunt or freshwater fish in jeopardy. Got it good. Have a good night!

Just because I want change doesn't mean I have to endorse a clearly ridiculous proposal. I never said I would do nothing.I said if its this,(or this type of thinking) or nothing We are doomed. Why would I place My hunting license in jeopordy for something that wouldn't make a bit of difference.
People break laws every day,do We change the laws to accomodate the violators? Never seen it once! If I am wrong do it and prove it! When do You have in mind, and where will You be with Your short fish?

Everyone is entitled to their opinion! How about some suggestions to resolve the problem rather than being negative. It`s easy to be negative and harshly judge those whose opinion differs from yours.

IMO... there are better ways to go about getting our point across.. Keeping a short fluke and telling the fish and game the time and place is not gonna stop them from ticketing everyone and the state making some more money at our expense.. all its gonna do is prove to them that they need to enforce the law more harshly.. Im not happy with how all this turned out by any means but we need to go about this differently..

To be honest I don't know what would work. A politician only cares about one thing..votes. What we need to do is research who is willing to help us with the regs and use our collective vote to get him/her in office. New Jersey is such a damn liberal state with all the special interest groups with the big bucks that the small guy has no chance. They certainly don't care about us lowly fishermen. Its very frustrating..seems like we have no recourse. The one thing we can't do is fight amongst ourselves. How about a petition? Can we get 200,000 names?

Mick got it right. Votes count.. We have to find someone who is in office that is either unawhere of what is going on or just can't be bothered.. e-mails don't work and the few letters of protest that is sent is probably never seen by him, but a mass mailing all delivered on one day would create havoc in his office. If not his office , then the PO in his home town..We need sacks of letters delivered on the same day..If you think he won't take notice then send them to News12 or even Eyewitness News..But we all have to get on the same page and it can't be done over night. We need the help of EVERY fishing group, tackle shops, boats. Maybe even gas stations and coffee shops..Now comes the hard parts;
1- Get someone to draft a letter explaining what is going on and if he wants our votes next time that he better get more involved in what is going on. Such as lost jobs, people going out of business and the loss of tax revenue to the state caused by the lack of people fishing because of these regs.
2-Find someone to donate a shit load of paper. I'm taking thousands upon thousands of sheets. We want to blanket the state with them. We want to give them to every store that will pass them out or put them in the bags of their customers.
3- Find a printer or printers that will print them, hopefully donate them. Maybe our special interest groups could help out here.
4- Set up points through out the state that vol. could pick them up and then they could pass them along to other vol. who would then bring them to their local businesses..After all this does affect EVERYONE.
5- set a date for them to be mailed and hopefully everyone will send them.
If sacks of mail are all delivered to one spot on a certain day then someone will have to take notice.

Now this is a great suggestion that is greatly appreciated! The question is how can we implement it. I certainly am willing to help and do my part in some capacity. I would like to say that I could be the leader of the band, but this daunting task would put me over my head.
Without speaking for someone. We would need someone who is well known and respected through out the fishing community, along with having resources, time and great organizational skills. Again, Thank you very much for a constructive response!
Ok Rum, I guess reality is setting in and a Boston tea party type rebellion won't get off the ground. 1,000 hits and maybe a scant 5 guys willing to actually participate. Of the estimated 1.5 million fishermen in NJ not very many give a crap. It is always the other guy who will do it.
Take the SSFFF for instance. This was probably the best cause thus far. But, the sponsor board shows a puny approx. 1,000 participants. However, it appears to be that the business end of the recreational sector is well represented, be it party and charter boats, bait and tackles, marinas and the like. They took the legal approach and it worked! Sure, it had it's detractors. Realistically, you will never be able to please everyone. But, this organization really opened some eyes. But, it came at a price. The legal arena can deplete a treasury at breakneck speed. And, professional scientists aren't cheap either. So, if you are looking for advice on how to start, whatever you decide to start. Contacting the SSFFF might be the place to begin, they might be able to steer you in the right direction.
In reality, has the fight been clearly defined? Not yet. The regulations aren't set in stone and will possibly changed. Are we looking for a longer season? Smaller minimum size? Increase to the bag? NJ state autonomy, break away from NY and Conn.? All of the above? No point in being rebels without a cause!
Politicians are the most fickle folks of all. We will get the world promised to us to get them in office. Then once in office it will go something like; Saltwater Fishermen? This state has saltwater fishermen? Tell them I'm not in. The dirtiest dogs in the world playing the dirtiest game.
Assemblyman Pallone, for my money, has always had the interests of fishermen at the forefront of his legislative agenda. But, he can't go it alone. Sometimes he gains allies, sometimes not. But, as NJ goes he's my man. Gov. Christie told us how he's on our side before he ever got elected. Maybe he meant if we ever got our Boston tea party type protest off the ground, he'd help get the harbor gridlocked with us.

So couldn't all these fishing advocacy groups and with the NRA come together as The United Sportsmans? I think that already exists? I guess more money goes to the lobbying of keeping guns than to keeping fishing rods. As been said, unity as the largest voting block will be the only means to political clout. Have not heard any comment or posts from any of our advocacy groups, official or individual. Except Angler Paul - thanks!Thats it? a done deal?."...........
...... and not one reply? First this is all NIMBY. Every individual and group here has a "personal" agenda, of which there is disagreement amongst like mined individuals. All the individual fisherman advocacy groups here have a different specific interests and some in common. At last years meetings in Toms River this was very apparent (the disagreement over size and bag) The NMFS went with the majority - a voting block. So you would think this year our voice would be heard, except it was diluted with the interests of the other states. And Mickrazz you got it right. This is all about money and votes - "pay to play"... and politics...look at what just recently happened to our menhaden quota and Christie: "I want to be president"
As far as this short fluke revolt, I don't think so. Under many forms of government, petitioning must be legally recognized and acted upon as "initiative and referendum". This would possibly help. Consolidation as a lobbying and voting block of all sporting groups is the answer. Money and agenda is the problem. Government controls when apathy and complacency sets in - the ultimate failure and downfall of all democracy/ republic society. So who called NJ Senators Booker and Menendez? Who mailed them all the written comments against regionalization? Comments from our NJ fisherman"s advocacy groups? Haven't heard many? And a lawsuit? on what merit? but thats what it will take! as a start.
I'll be more than happy to provide as much copies of the notice. I have the ability at work, let me know...

I called both Booker and Menendez for what it was worth... You hit the nail on the head though, in that it`s all about pay to play so that our voice is heard.
I agree, consolidation of the voting block as you mentioned is key towards a long term solution. Thanks for taking the time to voice your opinion it`s a great response.

And a lawsuit? on what merit? but thats what it will take! as a start.
Nice reply, very well thought out and explained. Sam had a great idea also. Politicians hate negative press. The perfect guy to get all this done is standing next to me in my avatar. God rest his soul.

Lol Booker and Menedez these guys are both Big Government Obama puppets worthless human ........... We are just plain F**ked

RUMSTER,
I don't believe it would be that hard to get these letters to the general public. I'm not talking about just this area, but the whole state, but as you stated we need someone that could put this in motion..Perhaps if the ssfff, rfa and all the others fighting for us could get together they would be able to print up a ton of letters..Mick said to get a petition with 200,00 name, sorry Mick, that's not gonna happen. The letter could also say that unless that this matter is looked into then you can't count on our votes..Votes count .It would be ideal if a printer could be found in every county that relies on the income from the fishing industry. Volunteers could then pick them up and distribute them to other vol.who would drop them off to any store or business that would hand them out.And if the person was really concerned they would take a few to pass out to their family and friends.
Ok, who do you mail them to/
You find out the main man that appointed these people to the council that will not listen to the facts or the public and on a certain day bombard him with 100,000 letters.

Great idea! The question is how do we as individuals direct these groups that represent us to follow through. As pointed out by Finfish in an earlier response most of these groups have there own agendas. The mere suggestion of the consolidation of any of the groups would mean that someone has to relinquish control and god knows there`s a lot of ego`s out there.
At the end of the day, that`s the way to go. Not sure if your a member of the RFA, but I would like join or for that matter any group that will fight for our rights as fisherman. Thanks for your response.

First of all I would like to say ur all going to say I`m CRAZY. Especially since this is my first post on this site. But we need to start looking at things differently. Were not an oil companies, a big bank or auto maker. We can not buy politicians. No one is going to bail us out. We need to find someone who lives in our area. A pillar of the community and a fisherman. Why buy one when you can make one. This person needs to have the right pedigree, has a college degree, has never been arrested ect, ect. Maybe someone who is already involved in some low level of politics, a mayor of a town or something. So we get a jump start. Why 1 person lets make 3 in case the first two fail:eek: These people should be young because its going to take time. But not to young maybe between 40 and 45 years old. Every state from Maine to Fla. should do this. I know this is a NJ site but the regs. should be the same for all of us. Why fight over crumbs with other states when we can all eat from the same pie. United we stand divided we fall. There are more then a million fishermen in NJ its much easier to get someone to vote then it is to get them to dedicate thier time and money. Its even harder to get people to all come together at one time and protest. Maybe I am crazy, Crazy like a fox:D Rumster you wanted ideas here is 1. I don`t think taking short fish is the right way to change things. Unless it`s a 1/8 of an inch short then I just step on its head:D That solves 1 thing, what im eating for dinner.

Spock are you Vulcan crazy!!!! You can't fight the government!!!! Just make your own regs. We as fisherman understand it's our duty to insure the future if what we love. So be smart about the way you harvest. That my friend is the answer. You can bet the government will destroy everything they touch. So why bother with corrupt politicians that only serve themselves or the ones that throw my under their door. That's like pissing in the wind. Even if you do catch fish they will probably take half your catch and give to some lazy slob that didn't feel like going fishing that day, but yet thinks he deserves your fish because your a racist. Lol I crack myself up. But that's your government in a nut shell .

I didn't say kill what you catch I said be smart with what you harvest ;) also just call or contacting the idiots that govern allows them to think they have power and we must beg them for what is ours to begin with. So to that end F**k the government they can't afford to police any law they pass but they keep on writing them anyway. Enforcement of laws is just to much work for them. Other wise they would have to abide by them too. heaven for bid
