Dear Atlantic Menhaden Pound Net, Otter Trawl, Gill Net, Bait Net License Holder:
New Jersey Menhaden Dealer:
As of February 10, 2014 the New Jersey Division of Fish and Wildlife has determined that the Atlantic Menhaden quota allocated to the commercial Pound Net, Otter Trawl, Gill Net, and Bait Net fisheries will be harvested by February 12, 2014. Based upon this information and pursuant to N.J.S.A. 23:3-51.11(d)1 (L. 2013, c.74, s.13) the New Jersey directed harvest of menhaden in the commercial Pound Net, Otter Trawl, Gill Net, and Bait Net fisheries will be closed as of 11:59 PM, Wednesday, February 12, 2014.
Therefore, effective 12:00 AM, Thursday, February 13, 2014, no vessel shall land or possess nor shall any dealer accept any Atlantic menhaden harvested by Pound Net, Otter Trawl, Gill Net, or Bait Net in excess of the by-catch trip limit of 6,000 pounds through December 31, 2014. The commercial Atlantic Menhaden Pound Net, Otter Trawl, Gill Net, and Bait Net fisheries will re-open on January 1, 2015.
If the New Jersey Division of Fish and Wildlife determines the directed commercial quota for harvesting Atlantic menhaden using Pound Net, Otter Trawl, Gill Net, or Bait Net was closed prematurely, notification re-opening those gear types will be provided.
If you have any questions, please contact the Bureau of Marine Fisheries at 609-748-2020.
Sincerely,
Brandon Muffley, Administrator

Oh boy! So exactly what does that mean? What was the quota just closed compared to the now 6000 lbs offload?.... percentage of a reduction? As charter, pb,and rec fisherman, how will this influence the supply and cost of bunker and chum? And then how about the local bait guys and docks like FS in Point where lots of bunker are brought in to be shipped? Yikes!

The part that I called them about was the 6000lb bi-catch allowed.
That is a joke right? Can you commercially harvest Stripers and blues by those means stated above in NJ with in 3 miles?

When we get into the month of May the bunker boats are working the the South side of Raritan Bay.NY does not not allow this on there side of the bay.We have been trying to ban them in Raritan Bay for years.Show me bunker and I will show you Stripers!Happy Russ lol. The two most useless things in Belford Are a Library and a dentist office! Catch your own bunker!Net builder Percy Wentworth from ''Staten Island NY" will be busy this year :rolleyes:lol

Does a cast net qualify as a "bait net"?

Does a cast net qualify as a "bait net"?
Yes
But I think you can use it being that you don't sell them for profit, you are just a fisherman, fishing.

How do you net blues without getting stripers?

How do you net blues without getting stripers?
That is exactly the problem!!!!!!!!!!!Pull up on Shrewsbury Rocks and there is the gill netter where all the stripers are holed up.He starts pulling and releasing ''dead stripers'' keeping the few blues and skates. The guy is laughing at us.What a waste! But it is perfectly legal so they just do it with no remorse.I have observed this many times over the years and it makes me sick!

dont go getting panties in a bunch , i believe this all has to do with commercial only ! recreational fishing is ok ! ....if you and a few of you buddies are going out and come across a school of bunker . a cast net to catch some for bait is ok ...but if you load up and try to sell the catch then you fall under the catagory of unlicensed commercial fisherman and get fined as ! but dont quote me on this because this is now the new america !

Can we and I am sorry to be blunt but when I say we I mean all of you, STOP using the word "Recreational"
Just say fisherman, that word recreational is a bad word, it's their play on words. They being the .gov.
We are fisherman, some are avid and some once in a while but we are fisherman.
Fisherman, fish for themselves to feed their families.
Commercial fisherman, makes a living.

Wrong again Russ,I ''try to'' and used to make a living as a charter boat capt. and I am not a ''commercial'' fisherman .There is a difference.A commercial fisherman sells his harvest,i don't.

russa ,
the reason i say recreational is because we keep what we catch and bring to the dinner plate. if it is not of the proper species we dehook and toss back , if its not of proper size we dehook and toss back! those fish live another day to be caught when they are of legal size . allowing them to spawn and create more fish!
commercial fisherman , yes they are out to make a living . but what they catch no matter what the target species is they end up with others in their nets. thus killing the by catch. no spawning, no procreating ect.
now guys like tuna fisherman or sword fisherman that use lines and hooks can be labeled as live line fisherman ! imo
if you dont set limits ...then later on you will hear guys bitching and moaning what the hell i went out and couldnt catch shit there is no fish left

This letter has created a lot of confusion and concern as to how the closure will effect our bait and tackle stores. First of all the letter addesses specific gear types, secondly it states that a by catch of over 6000 lbs. is prohibited.
Most if not all of our bait boats bring in far less than that amount. Therefore this rule will have no effect on our local bait and tackle stores or the fishermen who want to buy bunker for bait. It should be business as usual.

^^^^^ thats what i was figuring , and alot of bait shops prob use local fishermen to go out and get bunker for them. since bait and tackle shops do not carry large quanities of bunker anyway !

If you keep using the word Recreational it will burn you, because these big Commercial Cororate Fleets say we do it for a living and rhe Recs do it for fun.
If you get away from the term Recreational and just state fisherman, well then you take ammo away from the Corporate guys and the .gov, who is very much influenced by them.
These people like to play on words, and your meaning and their meaning is two different things.
But fisherman, well that only has one universal meaning.
