View Full Version : Call for action
Relentless Charters

Good Morning,
OK New Jersey Fisherman, your Giants beat us twice in the Superbowl and we can all call each other friends now. On a serious note we have an issue here coming up which will effect the private angler and the Charter/Party fleet which many of you book. The Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary has put in a proposal as part of the Ominus Habitat Protection. They would like to close 55 SQ Nautical Miles to all RECREATIONAL FISHING. That was not a typo that was not Five but fifty-five square miles on Stellwagen Bank. This will be voted on for approval or opposed by the members of the New England Fisheries Management Council on 24 February.
What can NJ FISHERMAN do to help, it will cost nothing and take just a few minutes. Please go to my website at www.relentlesscharters.com and scroll down where you will see a call for action and a link called RECLTR. Please open up the link and you will see a word Doc there http://relentlesscharters.com/reports/wp-content/uploads/2014/02/RECLTR.doc You can either open up here or through the website.
Once open feel free to change if you would like or you can fill in your name and address on the bottom and email to tnies@nefmc.org
We appreciate anything you can do to help us on this matter because we all know the plan will be to grab additional areas and we will end up like California with MPA's and NO FISHING ZONES.
Thank You for your time and please keep this going and pass on to friends who fish and other family members.
Respectfully,
Captain Dave Waldrip

Dan,
Thanks for submitting the letter, hope I made it easy for anglers to send in. I am not very good at the computer stuff but wanted to make it as easy as possible. Let me know what you are thinking for coming up this season again as we love having you and Dot on the boat.
Thanks,
Dave

Done and thanks for bringing this to our attention Dave.
These Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) are very popular out in California and it was only a matter of time before they tried doing it here in the east. For those of you who are not familiar with MPAs, if an area is made an MPA you are not allowed to fish that area.
It's Stellwagon now, what if it were Sandy Hook or Shrewsbury Rocks??
Please take the time to do this and for those of you who do not have Word you can copy and past the text below and email it to tnies@nefmc.org
I would also ask that you considering sharing this on your Facebook page by going up to the very top of the page and clicking on the Blue F button.

Proposed Stellwagen Bank Sanctuary Ecological Research Area (DHRA)
Dear Mr. Nies:
I am writing to you as a recreational angler regarding the proposed habitat protection measures being considered by the New England Fishery Management Council (NEFMC), I strongly oppose any changes to the Western Gulf of Maine closed area and strongly support No Action.
In the past few years since the introduction of catch shares, we have been forced to run further offshore to locate ground fish with the high costs of marine fuel. I do not feel it is justified to deny public access in a 55 square NM area from recreational anglers forcing them fish further offshore in small boats. The waters located in the SBNMS have been fished by recreational anglers for decades. Recreational anglers do not harm the bottom fishing with hook and line. Currently most recreational anglers are fishing for ground fish for only six months because of the prohibition on cod from Nov – mid April.
The recreational sector always seems to be left out of focus when it comes to spotlighting NEFMC issues and initiatives; in reality, the socioeconomic importance of recreational fishing cannot be ignored in this critically important vote. I strongly support No Action, and ask that the NEFMC recognize the significance of our recreational fishing industry and the socioeconomic impact this will place on the recreational fisherman and charter/party boat owners.
Any additional closed areas for the charter/party and recreational anglers will create an adverse effect on a sector that is already operating under rules with strict bag limits, minimum size limits, a hard TAC and a five-and-a-half month closed season on GOM cod. The fish that we do extract are used for personal consumption for meals at home and also are part of the allocation recommended by the NEFMC and approved by the NMFS. This proposed closure clearly does not justify the future socioeconomic impact on the recreational fishing sector. Charter customers and recreational fisherman spend millions of dollars to go fishing supporting many local businesses, from tackle shops charter and party boats, restaurants and hotels which will all be affected by being denied access.
Respectfully signed, Date: ________________

Done, I just hope Tom Nies (and other fishery managers) don't just delete all of the emails that recreational anglers send.

And if you all remember, a few years back they tried and failed to make Sandy Hook an MPA.
We need to stop this thing in it's tracks!!

Is there any scientific evidence that closing the 55 mile area will help the fish population? Is it permanent? Why is there a proposal to close that area?
I'd like some understanding of what I'm send before I send it.

If you'd like to read more on MPA's you can go here to read about what is happening out west http://www.californiafish.org/endangered_fishing.html

I understand what a MPA is. What I'm not clear on is why there's a proposal to add one along the Stellwagen Bank. Is there scientific evidence showing that the fish population is in trouble? Is commercial fishing excluded? Isn't there already a 800+ square mile Stellwagen Bank MPA? How is this different?

Gerrys right.
Google MLPA MPA, on the west coast you can walk across the dots, that's how many they have.
Sent the letter, lets hope it has an impact
