View Full Version : Hi-Mar Fishing Flea Market 2/15 Fundraiser
Last year I had elderly neighbor who is 70 years old who is primary caregiver for her 90+ year old mother who is bed ridden 24/7 . She ended up falling down her stairs and injuring herself pretty bad and had no one to help her out with her mom. That motivated me to get table at Hi Mar Flea market to raise some money for her by selling off some of my fishing gear.
Was able to raise enough funds to get her back on her feet so she could take care of herself and her Mom. She is so grateful for all the help she now calls me SON. Was also introduced to elderly Gentleman last year that was in great need and also began to help take care of him. He calls me Mr. Alex and says that I take better care of him then nurses that come in to help him with his open wound. I know you can not help everyone who is in need but if you can make a difference in one persons life then it is worth the effort as the satisfaction you get back is many times more then the effort you put in
The guys at Hi-Mar were a great help in making all this possible so I am looking to do the same thing this year as they have stepped up to the plate once again this year by donating table for me to use. I think I will be in the same spot against the wall in the back. Do not have as much stuff as I sold quite a bit at last years event as well as during Yard sale I had my home this past Oct which raised over 3K. Over the next few weeks I will be hitting the current flea markets to accumulate additional gear to sell off at this event. If anyone has any gear they are willing to donate please contact me or stop by the table as many of you did last year to drop stuff of.f
Please take the time to block off date on your calendar and Support the Hi-Mar Fishing Club as money they raise goes to support many good causes.

Spent the weekend looking to acquire some gear to resell at Hi-Mar show. Raritan Bay anglers on sat and another one in NY on Sunday. One of the first guys I see on Sat at RBA is Richie Tropics. Tells me he has something for me. Head over to his table and he hands me 2 brand new Fin-Nor surf combo's. These were really nice. Must be 300 bucks worth of gear if I bought it at store. Tells me to sell them at show and donate all the money raised. Class Act. I also ran into to Jerry from OMT Tackle and he donates nice bag of his custom buck tails. Met member TomKat who I never met before who was selling some nice rods. He recognized me and sold me nice cod rod, Blackfish rod and customer spinner at ridiculously low price to help the cause. Bumped into Eric Mortgageman who tells me will be donating pair of brand new boots.
I am always amazed put not surprised how people seem to step up to the plate whenever someone is in need.
Personally I have budgeted 1000 dollars to cause. Have spent about 600 bucks worth of gear so far. Have 400 bucks left to spend so if you have some fishing related stuff to sell that I can turn over for a profit let me know. Will be open to any donations as well . My goal is to raise at least $2000 dollars so I can give at least 1000 dollars to each of the recipients

Did you happen to run into Steli at that Flea Market? He asked if I had a table? (I do) He said he had some stuff that I could sell & keep the $. I told him your cause was much more worthy that the "Help Ron Have Another Beer Fund."
Probably easier if take what he has, sell it at my table and Split the $ with you. Half for you, half to go towards another Hi-Mar Kids Trip. (The beer fund is fully funded at present time ;))
See you there if not sooner.
Ron
That sounds perfect. I was there early and was out of there in about an hour
so I did not see him.

Alex, I checked with Capt. Robby at the meeting tonight, My table will be next to yours. I am bringing very little of my own stuff. So, if Steli doesn't have a lot for me, I will have room for any spillover from your table.
That is great news. Appreciate all your help and that of your club

I shared your story with at our Hi-Mar monthly meeting last night and asked our members to reach out to you if they'd like to donate to your inventory. I had a few guys come up to me after the meeting saying they were going to connect with you at the flea market.
We'll see you next week.
Thanks

Better get a bigger table!!
Just save room for:
25 lbs. 8 oz. REG.
25 lbs. 8 oz. FLAT
25 lbs. 10 oz. REG.
25 lbs. 10 oz. FLAT

Wow, hope we have room for everything.
Tim and Sam. Thanks for the offer. I am glad Ron will be close by if there is overflow. Having to much stuff and not enough room will be a nice problem to have. Hopefully most stuff will sell but that is sometimes not the case as people want to offer 20 bucks for a custom rod sometimes. Last year people were really nice knowing that money was going to a good cause and did not beat me up on price so much as in years past. Met a lot of new friends at this event last year who I never met before who were extremely generous. Will see if I can bring one of recipients with me to sit at the table and meet all the nice folks.

Will have a few reels. Thinking about selling my Revo Inshore. Might be hard to let it go as I caught my 13.3 lb fluke on that reel. Just had it serviced at Reel Seat. Keefe you might be in trouble as this real has some real good fluke Mojo.

I'll be donating some things as I did last year. You're doing something very nice.
Continuing to acquire more gear for the fundraiser. I received call from fellow njfishing member and friend frankqiu. He asked me to stop by his restaurant after work to pick up a few things he wanted to donate. Could not believe my eyes as he pulled out 8 rods (From light fluke spinner up to tuna/shark rods) Many of these are brand new never fished. I was drooling over old school custom lami fiberglass split grip cod/blackfish rod.
He then hands me bag that is filled with 9 reels (Penn, Diawa, Shimano and even a Penn International 50W).
I offered to give him some money but he would not have it. For those who know Frank he is extremely generous. I was blown away by his generosity as well as all the support I have received from other members here. He even fed me. mmm mmm GOOD. His place is amazing and the food is outstanding. If you like sushi and Asian Fusion menu this place is hard to beat.

Nice to hear about my buddy Frank Q donating so much great stuff & I know others from this board donated great stuff as well. I hope that anybody who buys anything from Alex's table pays the going rate. Don't try to haggle over spending maybe a dollar or two more remember what he's selling is going to a good cause. I know he will price his items at a good fair rate so you will find some nice bargains at his table.

Hi Sam
We are still on. We will be in contact with the VFW later today to check on the plowing status. I'm sure we're going to loose a few parking spots with the additional snow.
If things change, I will post here and the Hi-Mar site.
Thanks

I hope the hi mar members consider rescheduling this event until next sat with all the snow that has come through the last two days and with possibility of more again sat I would think attendance would be affected greatly my friend is currently at greater Philadelphia sportsman show and said it has been ghost town and that has a lot more draw than this flea market. It would be in best interest of everyone involved to postpone it one week till next saturday postponing one day till sunday doesn't give enough time to get word out of schedule change.

Great idea, unfortunately, the VFW has other commitments scheduled for the following weekend as do our vendors and many Hi-Mar members. Unless you are involved in an undertaking of this size you can not know how difficult it is to simply reschedule. We, all Hi-Mar members, go through this every year. It is not an easy task but we do the best we can. Sorry, but unless Capt. Robby and Tim B. say otherwise, tomorrow it is.
Thank you for reply Reelron. I understand changing it would be a logistical nightmare. So I guess I will see you guys tomorrow. Hopefully the people come out and there is a good turn out.

We are on for tomorrow. I just heard from Capt Robby and the VFW will do all they can to get the parking lot ready for our event.
Shake out that cabin fever and come on down.
We appreciate all the support and wish we had super bowl weather, but you can't control mother nature.:)
If there are any last minute changes, I'll post it here
Thanks

Decided to raffle off one of my favorite custom rods to raise additional funds. It was built on a All Star blank and measures 7'2". The grip work alone is outstanding and was very time consuming. Will make a great fluke or light striper rod. Whoever wins this rod is going to be a one happy camper.
Cost of Raffle will be $10 dollars for 1 entry or $20 dollars for 5 Entries. Winner does not to be present as I will be pulling winning ticket on May 1, 2014
Anyone who can not make it to show can still enter raffle by sending me a PM. You can use Paypal and gift it or send me a check to my address. For anyone who donated any gear already I will enter your name automatically into drawing. Enclosed are pics of rod.
Looking forward to seeing everyone at the Flea Market tomorrow

I have been a Hi-Mar member for more years than I would like to mention and I have also been involved with the flea market since its inception. Njfishing guys are the best. Gerry and crew have supported us since day one and it is appreciated more than you know. Alex, Gerry and our friends at NJ Fishing
On behalf of the Hi-Mar Striper Club, I'd like to thank all of you for your support and your participation of our Hi-Mar Flea market. We ended up having a very successful day in spite of the snow, sleet and rain.
As you know the proceeds from our events go to fund a variety of charitable activities in our area, and your support of our flea market and tournaments really help us help other people.
Alex- Congratulations on your efforts. Your charitable endeavor to help your neighbors is commendable.
Can not thank the guys from the High Mar Club enough for all the their help and support. NJ fishing members as well as total strangers really stepped up to the plate to make it a fun and very gratifying event. As Ron mentioned earlier their are to many people to thank so a big group Thank you as I do not want to leave anyone out. I had my 8 year old nephew/godson with me as I wanted him to learn how lucky he is and how important it is paying it back forward. It was fun to watch him interact with people as he was a big help to me in raising almost 1400 dollars between equipment I had for sale and stuff that was donated to me. Money raised for the Raffle rod I had also added to the total.
The cherry on top of the day was having total stranger come up to me and hand me a hundred dollar bill and thank me for what I was doing. My nephew called him the mystery man as he would not give me his name. It really helped cement the message I was trying to teach my nephew.
" To be thankful for what you have, give back to those in need and not expect anything in return".
Instead of spending money I gave him on himself like he has done in the past he used money to buy gift for his grandmother and sister. The extra 4 dollars he had left he asked me to donate it to the fundraiser. A total home Run in my book.
I still have some nice reels left and a few rods that I will try to sell on my own to try to reach my goal of 2000 dollars. The drawing for the Custom raffle rod will take place May 1st so there is still some time to purchase tickets for the drawing. Cost is $10 for 1 ticket and $20 bucks for 5 tickets. You can send me check or gift through PAYPAL.

Decided to move the drawing date for the custom rod up to April 1st as interest has died down since show and want to make sure Angler can enjoy rod during the early season bass run. Rod is a custom spinning built on a All Star blank and measures 7'2". The grip work alone is outstanding and is extremely labor intensive as each piece has been cut individually and then glued and sanded. Will make a great fluke or light striper rod. Whoever wins this rod is going to be a one happy camper To have rod built like this with custom grip work would run an easy 300 bucks.
Cost of Raffle will be $10 dollars for 1 entry or $20 dollars for 5 Entries. Winner does not to be present as I will be pulling winning ticket on April 1, 2014
If still interested in purchasing tickets instructions are on post above.
Thanks again for all the support
