Took a ride around today see how the lakes looked only to find a guy all by himself and no body within a ear shout! Guy insisited on walking out to test drill. Told him i wasnt leaving until he came back in then After strongly advising him not and only a short distance from open water he proceded on as he walked the ice would splinter under his feet he drilled a hole and made it back in said there was about a inch anda half. Moral of this post is it hasnt been that cold that long and pushing yhe season is not worth it! I wana ice fish as much as the next guy just use your common sense and stay safe. Oh yea bonus of the day was one pickerl and a half dz crappi. Right down the street safe and sound on solid earth

I live on a small 15 acre lake in Sussex county and as of this morning, there are spots with about 1 1/2" of ice and still some open patches of water (and I'm sure everything in between). I know this lake like the back of my hand and can't figure why for this freeze there is still open water where it is (based on depth, shelter, etc compared to the rest of the lake). My point is PLEASE be careful out there because you can never predict it. Knowing my lake and seeing it as it sits this morning, I would caution anyone against going out on any body of water yet this weekend. It's only mid December - give it a bit and be safe.
Side note - YOJ Sports on Rt 206 in Andover last year was giving out free ice spikes to those that needed them, no purchase required. I haven't been there in a few weeks but they said they were going to do it again this year.
