I'm looking into setting up a charter next year in Montauk (I know this is NJ fishing.com, but figured I'd try here anyway) for stripers. We fished with a captain there for a number of years, but the group opinion is that his heart really isn't in it anymore. Group of 4-6, don't need anything fancy, just a working head in case a wife or girlfriend comes along. Thanks in advance!

Herls girl. Capt Tom. Been fishing with him for 20 years. Don't bother asking for the first Saturday in June. We have that date in perpetuity:D I suggest a split day, stripers and fluke.

Send me a PM if you want more info. He is THE best inshore capt out there IMHO.

The Charter captains in Montauk are like a murderers row line up. The ones who have been there for years and years lasted there for a reason and are all amazing including the ones just named. I've fished with many of them over the years and only found one who was a great fisherman but did not know how to show his charter a good time. We were all experienced live liners but he would insist on dead sticking the rods and setting the hooks himself rather than lettiing us fish (WTF?). That was the one and only charter with that captain. Rob Aaronson of the OH brother can really find some of the biggest bass I've seen and is a good Captain. The best duo in my opinion was Otto Haselman and his mate Terry (red man) Cooper of the fishhooker. They could put you on the fish and were the nicest guys you could ever find. I was sad to see Otto retire a few years back as I had fished with him on many a trip.

Well said Mattsea you can't really go wrong with any of the "old timers" it comes down to who you like. With that said, I have fished with most you mentioned the others mentioned as well. But Tom on the Herls girl is my go to guy. He has show. Me more successful trips then I can count. Nothing wrong with any other of the well known guys mentioned. I guess I just like Tom best.

Capt. Bob Storc "The Caprice"

Wow I wasn't even sure he was still out there. Bob is probably one of the oldest Striper fishermen out there & very good to be out there that long. All the suggestions you got from everybody here are right on you can't go wrong with any of them .

JOHN D- not really that important. I know we'll have at least 4, up to 6. One buddy will bring his wife, I'll bring my son (16), so a working head & a little room to stretch out are the real priorities, as far as type of boat. And an agressive captain who wants to catch fish, of course. :D

Thanks to all who responded, I think you've given me a lot to work with.

Just got the bad news that Captain Tom from Herls's Girl is taking a break this year from charter fishing, so I'm back on the lookout for a new charter captain in Montauk. Any suggestions? Have a regular crew of 6 guys that make the drive each year.

Wow. First I’ve heard this. I’ll call Tom and get a reference from him.

Capt. Bob Storc "The Caprice"

Probably the oldest Striper sharpest charter captain in Montauk. I wasn't aware that he was still in business but he's been in Montauk for over 60 years & been considered tops in the business for that long. That alone should tell you something.

Give Capt. Jamie of the Miss Montauk a call. His son just recently started his own charter business. He learned from one of the best. Boat is very nice and completely redone.

For a larger group up to 6 Tom Mikoloski on Grand Slam Charters is good. Not a Montauk local which may throw some off, but he's solid. Retired NYPD as are his mates. Good guy we did very well eeling for bass. I had my wife and 7 year old daughter out and the capt and crew were great with them. Nice comfortable down east boat as well.

Capt Joe on Bloodline Sportfishing is also really good. He runs a center console and fished three very comfortable. Very good young captain. Went night eeling with him and we crushed the big bass.

I Recommend both.

Capt Rick, Breakaway. First class operation. Many of these yahoos in Montauk bring you in when you limit out on strippers. Be prepared to be back at the dock by 9 or 10. Rick will take you Sea bassing for awhile as well. Alot of these guys have attitudes Rick does not

I've been lucky I guess, I went with another boat before I fished with Herls Girl, and on both operations we fished for stripers & blues until we got our limit, then we fished for seabass & porgies the rest of the day. But thanks for the warning, I'll make sure I get it all straight before I book.
